Question about UV unwrap?? please help

Hi there people.

i recently downloaded UV Unwrap for Zbrush, i have managed to unwrap and flatten successfully. My question is, is there anyway to export the flatten unwrap into lets say photoshop, so i can see what im editing and put all the right textures in the right place?

thanx in advance!

Hi there,

the easiest way to do that is to go to Tool/Texture Map and click on New from UVMap or New From UVCheck. If you switch on Polyframe before you do that, you can also see your Geometry.

After that you just clone the texture and export it out using the normal texture export option.

Hope that helps.

P.S.: wrong forum btw

Yes, as dsoellbuster says, you can create a map to paint in Photoshop like this:

  1. Unwrap with UV Master.
  2. Switch on polyframes (Shift + F).
  3. If you want your map to have a black wireframe set the Color to black.
  4. Set the Tool>UV Map>UV Map Size slider to the size of map you want.
  5. Press Tool>Texture Map>New From UV Check. This will create a new map based on the UVs.
  6. Press Tool>Texture Map>Clone Txtr. This will put a copy of the map in the main Texture palette.
  7. Select the map in the Texture palette and press Texture>Export. You can then open the saved map in Photoshop.

@ marcus_civis: lol marcus as always … exact to the last dot  i guess that’s what’s happening when you are programming all day long. Thanks for the input, didn’t know that you can actually change the wireframe color like that.

thanx alot for the replys guys, means alot to me, as most forums ive been to have overlooked what i have asked

Hi, for explaining the steps Marcus. I have run into a couple of problems and I was hoping you or someone else might be able to offer some help.

Question 1 - I followed your steps (above) and saved the UV file from ZB as a .psd file, but when I opened it up in Photoshop it was not in a layered .psd file but flattened. (see image link) Why is it not saved as a layered .psd file?

• I created the UV map
• I then selected (Shift + F)
• I the selected “black” from the color palette on the lower left
• Next I selected “New From UV Check”
Map looks like map in image (above link)

Question 2 -
Notice my texture is white and looks clean here: http://img442.imageshack.us/img442/5627/headpa.jpg

My texture is white and looks clean until I select “New From UV Check” and export it, then it gets a thick edge around it and the background turns grey? Why is this. Can I save a map from ZBrush with black lines and a layered .psd file?

Thanks

Anyone able to help with this?

Paint Guy,

Question 1:

ZBrush doesn’t save PSD files with layers. That shouldn’t be a great problem though because you can soon create the layers you need in Photoshop.

Question 2:

The ‘New From UV Check’ button will always create a grey texture. It is designed to show you the UVs, and any overlapping areas should they be there (which will be in red). It is not intended to be used for a final texture.

A possible working method would be:

  1. UV map your model in ZBrush using UV Master.
  2. Use ‘New From UV Check’ to create a texture map that shows the UVs and export this to Photoshop.
  3. In Photoshop create a new layer and paint the texture as you wish, using the background as a guide.
  4. When finished painting the background can be deleted or filled with white. The Photoshop file is then ‘flattened’ before saving and importing into ZBrush for display on your model.

HTH,

Love the Unwrap tool but have a quick question - is there a way to go from polypaint with no uv to a uv unwrap that I can export to photoshop with the polypaint visible on it ? I ask because it makes sense to me to rough in polypaint and tidy up in photoshop . Can zbrush export a flatened uv map with a rough polypaint on it and if so how do I do that ?

I’m tripping up on this tonight and having trouble getting to where I want and stumbled onto this thread…

Cheers for an insight .

Hi there,

of course it is possible. Go to your lowest subdiv level and create your UVmap with Uv master. Once done, go to your highest subdiv level and go to to Tool/Texture map. Click on New from Polypaint. Once the texture has been created, click on clone and then export it out through the regular Texture menu.

Hope that helps to prevent another sleepless night.

Well - Thankyou so much . Sometimes the simple things end up being the most
puzzling . It worked like a charm . For some reason I thought I had to apply a uv tile map to the model before unwrapping it - that caused confusion and crashing . I started on a clean copy of the model and Uv master did it all for me.It applies the uv and let’s me pollypaint BEFORE I unwrap .

A small note to others - I was running windows media player for music in the bg and for some reason this caused problems while making a texture from polypaint .I stopped the music and walla - the uv unwrap with pollypaint on board happened in seconds . Great stuff altogether .

Dsoellbuster - Answering questions like this really helps . Thankyou .:+1:
