projection master maybe broken

hey all. newbie here. trying to figure out zbrush and its features. i have been recently trying to mess around with projection master lately and for some reason my projection master is not keeping the texture on the model. i do what is told i drop now to canvas, i use a certain tool to paint with for a texture, i then pick up canvas and then the texture just disappears. i have been trying to follow the kris kosta tutorial in skin texturing and i have been following it to a T and everytime i pick up the canvas the texture just disappears. please help. thank you.

I just checked on my system (Mac 3.12) and it seemed to work as expected. What are your system specs and steps to reproduce?

Things to check:
Make sure your object is ready for polypainting or texture painting before starting projection master. Also, be sure you’re checking the options (Colors, shaded) before dropping to canvas. Also, be sure your model is not inside-out (e.g. turn off “double” under display options.)

HTH,

how would i know when it is ready for texture painting? is there as step i seem to be missing?

Make sure it has UV’s and a blank texture has been added from the texture pallet. Texture Master should warn you if it isn’t ready for polypainting or texture painting. (I use polypanting mostly and the convert the paint to a texture at the end . . .)

i dont know what im doing wrong. i tried the texture master to see if it has UVs and everytime i press the uv->texture it turns the model black and i dont know why. i know when you press it its supposed to turn it to different colors to say it has UVs mapped but it just wont do it. this is odd.

If everyone else is using a plugin with no problem, it’s not likely that the plugin is broken. Also, some advice when asking questions… post screen-grabs of the problem you are having… this helps a lot in diagnosing an answer.

I’m a little confused with your last post where you say you tried Texture Master “to see if it has UVs”. Huh? Texture Master is an outdated predecessor to, and replaced by, Projection Master. If you are using Texture Master, where did you get that? Are you on PC or Mac?

What model are you using? Did you create it? If so, using which software?

Rule of thumb is if a model appears black then UVs are likely absent.

Applying UV mapping inside ZBrush is easy. With your model in edit mode, go to the TOOL:Texture menu section. If Disable UV button is not grayed out, you already have UV mapping applied and your problem is something else. But if the Enable UV button is not grayed out, press that. Then press GUVTiles which applies Grouped UV tiles. Save a new version of your model (tool) for future use.

Before returning to the tutorial, create and select a new texture map and go into Projection Master and try painting some color on the dropped model. Pick up the model and you should see the painting applied to the texture. If that works, go back try the tutorial again. If not, ask more questions here.

It simply sounds like your model doesn’t have UV’s.

In Tool>Texture is “Enable UV’s” available or grayed out? If it’s available, click it.

Either way, the next step is to go to the Texture palette and create a blank texture. Set the desired size (which should be a power of 2 such as 1024x1024, 2048x2048 or 4096x4096) then press Texture>New.

Now back in the Tool palette press Tool>Texture>GUVTiles. This assigns UV mapping to your model so that Projection Master can actually work with a texture on it.

thank you aurick, svengali and kerwin. it finally worked right. i guess saying it was broken was a stupid answer. lol. thank you very much for helping me. i hope to get better at this program even if it kills me.
