Projection; how to avoid spikes?

Every time I am trying to project subtools in a single volume I get some spikes in deep areas, holes etc. It never goes right. That’s the reason I pretty much don’t use the whole “modelling free then project everything” method and all the new dynamesh/shadow box Zbrush features and use the old way: do/unwrap everything in 3d soft and use Zbrush for some detailing only.

Perhaps it’s just impossible to get rid of spikes completely in problem areas or am I missing something?

In my experience, the projection work best by repeating it in steps: i.e. SubDev1>Project>SubDev2>Project>SubDev3>Project>SubDev4>Project>etc… As you get to your higher SubDev levels you may need to do some refining like in between the fingers, mouth, eyes and the nostril area. for that part you can quickly mask out just the problem areas>polish and use the ZProject Brush. Also, I see more often than not that the projection doesn’t like working with manifold quads and a surface that has overlapped itself.

This is why the qremesher is going to be awesome! It will eliminate most of what I covered.

Thanks, I am working on mechanical objects now, not characters and the trick is somehow not always working. Zproject brush makes sometimes more mess than before. Would be nice if it could project in both directions at the same time.
