ProjectAll or Projection?

I’m almost done re-topologizing my model. When I go to preview it the adapitive skin preview with projection features added, it blows everything out of proportion and I notice the buttons strength and range on it seem to help, but not perfectly.

I also tried using the project all tab under the subtool menu which worked fabulous except some key areas polys were extremely stretched out. I’m running out of options I think. Which one is better? My other question is what other alternatives do I have besides these two features?

After many experiments I am becoming a fan of project all.

Here is my procedure:

  1. I retopologize the mesh inside of ZBrush to get a satisfactory base mesh. I then save this out as it’s own ZTool

  2. I then merge this new base subtool into my original ZTool

  3. I then store a morph target of the original ZTool, this allows my to paint with the Morph Brush to fix errors that may occur during the project all

  4. I inflate my new base subtool to ensure thatt it will fit over the original. This will help the project all procedure.

  5. I sub divide my new base subtool and use the project all button with each iteration of subdivisions.

  6. I then use the Morph Brush to paint out errors. This will mean re-sculpting some areas.

It is important not to advance too far in your original sculpt before doing retopology. Get you base proportions and silhouette and then retopologize. This will ensure that you get maximum details on higher more detailed sculpting.

I really like using this feature going in and out of Zbrush with new base meshes from Max or Maya. This way I do not have to worry about vertex order.

Sweet! Thanks for your response…

After some tweaking with strength and range buttons I managed to get the projection to work. But Ill definitely try your method out, “project all” isn’t as time consuming. I’ll probably end up going your route. Thanks again!

Also, if you have only small parts of model visible at once then you will almosy always be able to get the pieces projected without tons of spikes. You can also go right to the highest level instead of working your way up. It still takes some time but it keeps from wrecking your sculpt and paintjob, even if your new topology is radically changed.
