Problems with Layers

Hello everybody!

I am trying to use layers to integrate some flexibility into the sculpting process but those layers are driving me nuts.

Sometimes it’s not possible to draw some new polypainting on a fresh layer, sometimes the model gets totally black when I hit the record button on a new layer (although no masking is used!) and sometimes a new polypainting looks and behaves weird (with fancy colorful edges, painting through the model without symmetry on and and ignoring masks).

Is there something special one has to keep in mind while using layers? Some special workflow? Or is it just buggy?

Cheers,
David

BUGGY! We’ve been asking for a better system since they added the layers.

That’s not good.

Should I avoid using layers because they will create trouble sooner or later?

So what is the best way to keep flexible? Just duplicating tools in different versions and using a morph target?

Zbrush is so much fun but things like this twist my brain from time to time (as I am used to work with c4d where nearly everything is undo-able)… :o

yeah, duplicates, saved iterations, etc.

Layers for sculpting aren’t as buggy…but still cause problems with them not actually turning off all the way. But with painting…ugh.

Yeah, zbrush is more akin to working in stone with certain features. But with others it is like working in clay, with undos and symmetry.

I tried to use layers but completely gave up on them. They have potential but right now they’re too unreliable.

Hopefully they get revamped in v5.
