problems with decimation master

hey guys, I’m new at this forum and kind of a noob at zbrush, so I’m having a few problems with it. I have a model with almost 1 million polygons, so I tried to use the decimation master to reduce the poly count. I’ve made all the steps that I saw in lots of differents tutorials, used the pre-process current button, after that was done, I configured the decimation to 60% and pressed the decimate current button. The problem is that the poly count got higher, almost 1 million and 500K polygons. So, how to a solve this problem?

Try this order instead.

  1. Set % of Decimation.

  2. Click ‘Pre-process Current’.

  3. Click ‘Decimate Current’.

keep happening the same thing. Seems like all the polygons get slashed in 2, at least is what i can see when turn on the polyframe…

This could depend on where you’re getting your numbers from. ZBrush reports the point/vertex count, not polygons. So if you were exporting a mesh and checking the polygon count in another program, then it could easily appear to have 1.5-2x the number of polygons as vertices. When that’s the case, decimation isn’t splitting every polygon into two polygons; it just works with triangle polygons, which are more accurate to report (every quad is really two triangles). Vertices are the most accurate thing to report, followed by triangles, followed by any other form of polygon.

If you’re working purely in zbrush and seeing it’s point count increase after decimation, then that’s a different story. Try knocking it down to the default of 20% to see if it helps give a more noticeable result.

so, should i consider the points number instead of the poly number? then I think it’s working, 'cause the number of points drops from 923917 to 758963 when i decimate with 50%. It means my model is lighter to import in other software?
