problems with clothfolds

hi

i’ve been recently practicing modelling clothfolds on some trousers, but i cannot get a grip on that.

here’s what i’ve managed to get without it looking like a total mess of nonsense.

or here

maybe with less folds and wrinkles.

i’m rather happy with how the pants look from the front view, but both silhouette and the folds are crappy when viewed from sides.

Please advice or share Your techniques on how to model folds like these properly.

It’s a nice start. Using reference is a great way to make things really look correct. From the look of it you’re currently grabbing pictures off of the internet.
I suggest look at the real thing. You can go to any ARMY surplus store and pic up a pair of fatigue trousers so you can put them on, stand in the exact pose you want and take pictures from every angle.
If you can’t find the exact thing you’re looking for (or if it is too expensive) you can always substitute that for a similar material

I have a mannequin that I can pose and play dress up with…it’s very useful for checking folds and such.

Clay, flatten, and standard are your friends when working with cloth. Masking is also very important.

Hope that helps.
