Problems importing OBJ into ZBrush 3

Hi

I am currently following the Joan of arc tut for maya with the intention of bringing into zbrush to try and learn some sculpting. I have modelled the body and tried as a test to import the OBJ into Zbrush but get the following message:

This mesh contains nonstandard polygons( more than 4 sides)

Would you like to split these polygons to sets of symmetrical triangles or to a combination of quads and triangles?

Quads and triangles (compatible with Z2) OR Symmetrical triangles only?

I have checked the mesh in maya and it looks like all quads to me and when I import into Zbrush and sub d, the mesh splits in the middle were I combined in maya.

Can anyone help?

Thanks

Hi there junky,

well i don’t use maya but i do know what you are talking about. As a lightwave user what i do is before exporting … merge all points, check my polygon statistics to make sure that all my polys are tris or quads (preferrebly quads of course)
If ZB complains about the polys, you can be sure that you have some odd polys within your model. So just clean it up and you shouldn’t any more trouble

You could have “stray” vertices left over from modeling in Maya.
Combining mesh (in Maya) does not mean it will be combined in ZBrush.
Press Polymesh3D ( in Tool palette) and an import palette will open.
Use this import window to bring in the obj. Use Mrg (merge points ) button and then import.
If this is not clear,or pain persists, post a screen grab of the offending part.

Thanks alot. I combined both halves of the mesh in maya but I think I may have to merge all the verts down the centre (where I joined the mesh) then do a clean up. If this doesnt work I’ll try the polymesh3d method.

Again many thanks

Thanks guys

merged the verts and done a mesh clean up and this done the job, nice one
