Problem with ZBrush in Windows 8. Help needed!

Hey guys, just last Wednesday I made the jump to windows 8 (was enticed by the performance and speed). Anyway, the problem arises when I zoom in a tool (let’s say just 100,000 or more) everything slows down in ZBrush, and this never happened in W7 with this system. For some reason the CPU usage percentage goes high up when I zoom in a ztool (it gets worse with a million polys). None of this happened with W7. This are my system specs: Intel Q3820, NVIDIA 670, 16 GIGS of DDR3 RAM @1600MHZ, 7,200 RPM HDD and a WACOM Intuous 4. Thanks in advance for your responses! BTW, running ZBrush in compatibility mode with Windows 7 does nothing.

I’m running Windows 8 and am unable to duplicate this on the Earthquake model included with 4R4.

Which version of ZBrush are you using? Is this happening with one model or with any model? The more info you can provide to duplicate the issue, the more likely we’ll be able to help you.

This is happening with a full male anatomy sculpt and with a bust that’s just over 200,000 polys. Will experiment with the ztools in lightbox. Thanks for replying!

Hmm, strange. Started ZBrush again and can’t replicate the problem. I opened the earthquake ztl, and even increased the poly count to 20 million. I also opened the male ztl I sculpted (the one that I noticed the problem with) it’s not happening anymore. BTW, I’m running ZBrush 4R4 P2.

It appears to have become something random now. Will keep you updated on this matter.

I think I found the cause of this problem. As soon as I copied my zscript to load a macro start up configuration, it started to happen again; this did not happen in W7. EDIT: now I’m seeing that when I turned on wax preview in my render settings, the problem arises (got it set up in my startup macro) and when turned off, things go back to normal. Again, this never happened in W7. BTW, If you want to replicate the problem, try with a custom made ztool (ie, no preconfigured render settings and other stuff) because I found that I can’t replicate the problem with a ztl from the lightbox.

Update: I think the problem has to do with the startup macro. These are my startup macro settings: [ISet,Document:Rate,0]
[IPress,Document:Double]
[IPress,Material:MatCap Red Wax]
[IPress,Material:z98]
[IUnPress,Brush:Samples:Spotlight Projection]
[IPress,Render:Render Properties:WaxPreview]
[ISet,Material:Wax Modifiers:Strength,40] Try these settings and write a zcript to run the macro at startup.

Thanks. We will be looking into this!

Are you finding w8 an improvement (apart from this issue obviously)

and where is the earthquake

Yes. I am. Never noticed this speed and responsiveness with a fresh install of windows 7 (fastest startup and shutdown I’ve ever seen. LOL). If you want to get the windows start button on your desktop and skip the metro start interface, just download classic shell from cnet (it’s just awesome). At the current price Windows 8 is a must have. BTW, the Earthquake is in the lightbox.

Thanks, aurick! You will find (maybe not in your current config) that as soon as you load the macro with the zscript load a tool, and zoom in. Get seriously close to the tool and move it around, the active memory in zbrush will spike to over 3 gigs and it will slow down when moving around it.

So, were you able to replicate the problem? if not, I’ll give you my zscript and see if you’re able to.

Yes, we were able to duplicate it and are looking into the cause and how to fix it.

Great! Thanks.

I was hoping the problem I reported would be fixed with R5…
