Problem with Selection/Mesh Visibility (is it my keyboard)?

Hi everyone. I’m new to Zbrush and using tablets. I have a decent tablet and a cheaper-side keyboard using Windows and I’m wondering if something is wrong.

When I try to use the selection or mesh visibility tools I have a lot of trouble. Here is what happens…

I hold “Control” and “Shift” keys and using my tablet I begin to draw the green rectangle but almost instantly, Zbrush closes the green selection square or makes a selection as if my keyboard is automatically repeating the key strokes. Or am I doing something wrong or need to set up the tablet specifically for Zbrush?

When you guys hold Shift and Control, are you able to draw the square and hold it there indefinitely? I am not lifting my pen or anything…

My keyboard is a cheap wireless one and I wonder if this is the problem?

Thanks.

You should be able to let up Shift+Ctrl as soon as you have started drawing. You can then hold down the spacebar to move the selection or hold down Alt to invert the selection (turning the selection from green to red).

If you have the same problem when using a mouse then it is probably your keyboard. If you can test with a different keyboard then that would make that clear. Otherwise make sure that your tablet drivers are up to date. ZBrush system specs are for a Wacom or Wacom compatible tablet. (WinTab API.)

Thanks Marcus,

I can report that I solved the initial problem by going into Windows settings and turning off the “repeat key strokes” option.
Now I can easily draw and drag around the green selection.

However, I please have a follow up question. I can hit “Alt” and turn the box red. But… there doesn’t seem to be a way to keep it red and drag the box around like when it’s Green.

What would the keystrokes be in order to freely drag a red selection box around? It only seems to work for the green.

Thank you,

Rick

Hi Rick,

You don’t need to do that. Just make your selection in green and then hold Alt to turn it red and release the mouse button.

OK, thank you. Appreciate your time and help. I could do that, but was just wondering if I could lock the rectangle red and freely drag it around while it’s red just like we can do when it’s green.

The main thing is that I just need to practice and maybe making it red at the last second will be fine.

You can hold down Shift+Ctrl+Alt to make a selection in red, and - still holding down the keys - hold down the spacebar to move the selection. But really, it’s so much simpler to do it the other way, and is more a case of how you think about what you’re doing than anything.

Awesome insight, thank you, sir.
