Problem when merging subtools together and subdivisions

I have three subtools, each with 5 subdivision levels. If I try to merge them, I lose all the subdivision. If I do the same with other subtools, it works fine. I have no idea why this is happening. I tried exporting, re-importing, apply UVs, delete UVs, cleanup, add polygroups, I don’t know what else to try.

Here’s the video of the problem:

Hidden geo or a mask are usually the issue.
Either way you should be able to just reconstruct your subD levels after you merge them. If that is also failing it should give you an error telling you why.

There are no hidden faces or masks, I even try exporting/re-importing them as new OBJ, and it also fails at reconstructing the subdivisions, it doesn’t say why, it just says “Unable to reconstruct subdivisions due to an error” which is not very helpful…

Try checking the mesh integrity.

I did, nothing to fix there.

i’ve got nothing.

I would take it into a traditional app and look for manifold errors.

Tried that as well, imported in Maya, everything seems fine. I’m baffled.

Can you upload the ZProject to Dropbox or somewhere else so some of us can see if the problem happens for us?

Hey there,

I don’t know if you still have this problem, but after some trials and errors I guess I found out what’s causing the problem. It happened to me too…

I’m modelling a character with multiple subtools, all have UVs and follow the same principle (low to high poly, at the moment I’ve deleted some of the high-res levels and I’m at SubD 4).

I’ve managed to merged almost all the subtools without having problems, but there are two substools that are those that are causing the problem.

Try to follow these steps:

  1. If you have multiple subtools merged correctly with subdivisions preserved, try this: Geometry > Meshintegrity > Check Mesh Integrity. It should say to you “Mesh integrity test completed successfully”.

  2. Try now to do it on a subtools that you think is causing the problem, it should tells you that there is error in the mesh. To me it says “The mesh contains 1156 out-of-bounds UV coordinates. The mesh contains 576 edges that are shared by more than two polygons”.

This is what you have to fixed in order to proceed and merged all the subtools correctly.

Hope it helps,
It used to drove me crazy not understanding what was causing the problem.

All the best with you project!

Gabriel
