Problem using Goz ZBrush4 and 3DsMax 2012

Dear Reader,

This is my first post and I really hope you can help me out.
I do understand 3DsMax but I’m new with ZBrush.
I use ZBrush 4 and 3DsMax 2012 and using the Goz mode.

Normal polygon models go ok with goz, but when I Goz
a editable polygon to ZBrush all goes wrong :frowning:

For my problem, I’ve set up this link, where I lay down
my problem I’m having with ZBrush and 3DsMax 2012.

I’ve been looking on the forums but couldn’t find a right
answer.

Please look at the following link for my problem;

Really hope someone can help me out or can give me
the right direction, my hairs go gray

Best regards,

Mick

It could be that Max is changing the gamma of your normal map. You have to change settings in Max to stop it doing this on import of the map. Or sometimes GoZ just doesn’t work properly, you may have to make sure that the normal map is flipped vertically (green channel).

I use Max 2012 also and this has happened to me also so I hope it works for you.

Thanks Trist for your advice. Your suggestion about the Gamma might work, but what I don’t understand is that I used same techniques for both of the ‘models’. The first model (the sphere) worked fine back in 3DsMax and has all mappings correct. The second model (the edit poly) goes wrong. Used exactly the same steps, and did not change anything in 3DsMax (gamma) or ZBrush.

Does it perhaps has to do with Smoothing Groups in 3DsMax? (didn’t delete them)

Hope you have an idea!

Best regards,

Mick

Hi Tris, just made a major ‘oepsie’ with the second model
I didn’t delete the lowest geometry before go back to 3DsMax.
That way, the model couldn’t be processed in a proper way in 3DsMax.

But thanks again for your advice! I have to learn to make small
steps to learn

Keep well,

Mick

Hi Mick,

While it’s good practise to have your base mesh subdivided once before you apply a normal/displacement map to it in Max, I don’t see why you would get the result in the last image by using the base mesh. Whatever gets you the right results. ZBrush doesn’t always use the same logic as other 3D apps! When you understand this you will learn to work more intuitively and not get bogged down in the technical details.

If you have any more questions I am happy to help.

Cheers.

Thanks Trist!

I guess that I have to learn the basics first, I really like ZBrush. Thanks also for your kind comment to help me out!
Happy ZBrushing and till later. Have a good weekend.

Best regards,

Mick
