Problem selecting polygons (answered)

Hi
I am probably doing something stupid but here goes…
I am working through a tutorial made for 3.5r3 that is wanting me to select a group of polygons to make invisible. The tutorial says to hold down ctrl and shift then drag over the group. This produces a green box. It then says to let go of the shift key and the box will turn red indicating that the polys will be removed. My problem is that I get no red box and the polys are selected but the rest of the model is removed.
Am I missing something or have things changed between 3.5 and 4?
I would ask my bud (who’s machine I am using) but he won’t be back till the new year.
Please help
Ray

“The Alt Key is now the alternative operation for hiding polygons as well as for masking. For example, start to draw a marquee to hide polygons outside the marquee. Then if you want to switch the marquee to hide polygons inside it, release the CTRL+Shift shortcut without releasing the mouse button and press the Alt key.” (ZBrush.info)

…unless I also received an alien copy, you have to use your little finger and hold down the alt key as well to hide polys. I am installing foot pedals for the next upgrade.

Once you have started drawing the selection you can let go the Shift & Ctrl keys. You can continue drawing the selection with no keys pressed, and also press the Spacebar to move the selection area. Finally you can press Alt if you want to invert the selection. No extra fingers are necessary.

Thanks @zhakespear, that was exactly what I needed. Even got me considering buying a copy of my own when bud takes his machine back.
