Problem reading 16 bit RGB files

I’ve been unable to find a workflow to get 16 bit RGB files into 4r2.

I’m painting displacement in Mari, exporting (mari exports rgb and cannot export grayscale), and trying to apply as displacement within ZB. I keep getting either a jumbled, noisy mess or what appears to be my texture w/ a tie-dye effect on it.

Problem with converting rgb to gray in Photoshop is that there’s a micro level noise leftover after the conversion that on highly reflective surfaces gets rendered.

Is this a known issue? Or am I missing something here, which is entirely possible - it’s been a LONG day! ha

Look forward to hearing from anybody with some knowledge or experience with this.

thanks!

Try setting the Preferences/Performance/Preload File Size to 500. That should let you import large images into zbrush.

thanks for the reply, joe. unfortunately, i’ve got that as my default setting so i don’t think it’s the file size that’s the problem here.

pixologic, is zbrush unable to read 16bit rgb without artifacts or errors?

thanks!

pixologic,

is this expected behavior; the rejection of 16bit rgb maps?

as i mentioned, mari is exporting these kinds of maps and doesn’t have the ability to export 16bit gray.

it’s not my intention to insult anybody’s pride by saying that i’m doing my texturing for production in mari. mari is, however, on the forefront of 3d texture painting for the industry and is quickly becoming a standard. now, i know that zbrush does texture painting and i love it, especially w/ Spotlight. i use it for production sometimes as well. nonetheless, it would behoove everybody who works in the field to make these programs work together.

the fact that a production artist cannot simply export a file from mari and import it into zbrush is a concern - it creates a lot of potentially unnecessary work.

also, the fact that tifs are still not recognized is a little befuddling. there’s probably a post somewhere else about why they’re not. i’ll look for it but until then, can i make a formal (as formal as an online forum post can be) request for tif support? pretty please!

is it reasonable to request support for 16bit rgb files (tifs, it that’s not going too far?).

this would be a step towards making this a better production tool rather than an amazing hobbyist tool.

thoughts, threats, concerns?

thanks for your consideration

Has this thread been buried and lost in the never-ending stream of troubleshooting inquiries?

I don’t mean to be pushy but as a production artist, this is a serious concern of mine. Is there a better place to address this?

Thanks
