Problem exporting texture, (gets pixelated) HELP please!!!! (solved)

Hi! I’ve been trying to fix this since … I’ve lost the count. I have this model I made on Modo and then brought to ZBrush. I textured it on Zbrush and added some small sculping details. BUT, when I finished the texture, I find that instead of looking nice (like this), it looks all pixeled… like this.

The texture map is 1024 x 1024. I modelled and unwarpped its UVs in Modo… and I plan to animate it in Maya… I took it to Maya already and it looks like the “baaad” pic. I’ve got another model (made it on a different computer actually) that has the very same problem :S

I thought that it might be because the texture map that I unwarped in Modo has the UVs too close to each other… so it’s like the final texture mixes up some UVs or something. However, I took the texture UV by UV, and separated them manually (the “relax” tool didn’t work very good)… but nothing went better… the texture keeps getting pixeled the same exact way.

I also tried to make it a bigger resolution, I even textured it all over again 2 or 3 times, but for some reason, even if I set the resolution to max, the final map is 1024x1024. What’s going on??? does anybody have an idea!!! than you guys!!

which version of Zbrush are you using? Are you using any layers? are there any masks applied to the object?
how many polygons?
can we see the UV’s?

what steps, exactly, are you taking to get your Texture Map?

Wow!! than you for your fast reply. Sorry for not answering before, I was out for a while.

So, I’m using ZBrush 3.12 for Mac OSX, and 3.5 for Windows. I’m doing this project with a friend, and he has the same problem (he uses Win), which makes me thinkk it’s something about the steps we are taking…

I’m using no layers at all. No masks either.

of polygons: in high res, I’m using 4.191 Mil

in low res it has 4,744

Here’s the model in Modo, and the UV map.

So, the steps I’m taking are: I select “new from polypaint”, then “clone texture”, and then from the textures, I select the one I just created, and I click on “export”.

Thank you very much for your time ^^

Anybody still there?? Should I try with the newest ZBrush version? There are some computers in school that have it… but I still have hope to get it fixed in my computer, because I really have no money to upgrade yet…

upgrade is free.

attaching the images within the page is a better idea than linking to them. I personally don’t like to click on links that take me to places I don’t know…paranoia probably.

Anyway, your image #2 doesn’t have any UV information, it is the same image as the first one.

All right, there’s the UV map. Sorry for the confusion, I pasted twice the same link. Oh, and I totally understand you rather have the images here… didn’t think of it before, sorry for that too.

I thought upgrading was the same price as if I bought it new… still didn’t check it thought. However, I don’t think it will solve the problem. I took my project to school (on a PC with the last ZBrush version) and it didn’t work. Same texture exported. I think it must be something about the steps I’m taking… and I’m starting frustrate… :frowning:

Did the images help anyhow? any ideas coming up?

The UV map is clean, but look at the face for a moment. Its too small.

The lips on the face for example are just about 15 pixels across if you are
using a 1024*1024 texture.

That’s gonna be really pixelated all right.

If you want more detail generally, use a bigger texture map (2k or 4K).

If on the other hand, you want to keep a small tex, you will have to
change the UV’s to expand the area of the regions you want more detail on.

Also, create a bit of a border around the edge of the map. It’s a bad idea to have UV’s right on the map’s edge.

Yeah!! That’s what I thought too, but when I set the texture to max, in the end it aaalways gets exported too small (1024*1024), no matter what I do. So the only thing I seem to be left with is that I’m doing something wrong when exporting… a missing step, a wrong selection… I don’t know  Can it be because of ZBrush’s default settings ?? do you guys know how to change those? (I’m not an expert as you may have noticed :stuck_out_tongue: ).

The steps I took to try to create a texture are: “Texture map” > “New from Polypaint” … and that creates a 10241024 texture map. How in the world can I make it bigger?? I tried by clicking on: “Texture” and creating a blank texture of 81928192. Then I clicked: “texture map” > “texture to color”. I paint the model. Then I click “texture map” > “new from polypaint”. And the texture is not 81928192 anymore, but 10241024. And then I cry xDD

I’ve come to take the 1024*1024 map to Photoshop, resize, and paint right on it… but it’s complicated cause when I take the map back to ZBrush it doesn’t exactly fit as it should.

Again, thank you guys for posting… you are my only hope right now

First go to UV Map-tab, select the size there, then go to Texture map > New from polypaint.

I´m not an expert but try that!

If it’s 3.12, then setting the texture map size is done through the texture
menu at the top.

The UV Map menu under’ tools is a ZB4 addition.

Yes!!! thank you guys so much!!! that was the big problem… I didn’t know about that one option to change the size of the texture exported… Still a loooooot to learn :stuck_out_tongue: I guess the normal map is done the same way…

Thank you again, really… for your time and patience.
