problem adding layers in zb 3.5

i can’t seem to add layers to my tool any longer.

its a model that has 7 levels of subdivision and at level 7 it has ~15 million polys. at level 1 it has ~3700 polys.

i have 12 GB of ram on a dual 64 bit proc machine running vista 64 and zbrush is only using 840 MB at the moment.

my compact mem is set to 4096 and the maxpolypermesh setting is 21 million (set by zb).

when i select a polysphere tool the New button in the Layers palette becomes active but if i select my 15 mil poly tool, the New button disables.

i created the base mesh in xsi 2010 and it doesn’t have any n-gons…its all quads and a few tris. i’ve created other meshes in the exact same way and can still add layers to the tool.

i cleared all masks and there are no hidden polys.

does anyone know why i can’t add a new layer to my tool? i’m at a total loss…

thanks!

turn off any other layers you have, or commit them to the mesh and try that.

i don’t have any other layers on this mesh…i’ve been sculpting to this point without them but wanted to experiment on a layer so i could get rid of it if i didn’t like the result.

sometimes this happens if you had layers before or did other various things.
anyway try cloning the tool, if that doesn’t work i suggest exporting the highest subd as a obj and then importing it back in as its own tool, then reconstructing subd’s, you could also hit makepolymesh3d before the import/export and reconstruct.
if the file is too large you could go a level lower, I/E that one, then divide it once and use project all from your original tool.

cowboy, cloning the tool worked…so did exporting the high rez obj and reconstructing the subd’s. not sure what happened to cause this but glad for the fix. thanks!
