Pressing Ctrl to drag Alpha Mask - am I missing something?

So I’m just going through tutorials, and I’m having this issue with masking with an alpha using ctrl. Simply put when I press Ctrl and drag the mask I am only getting solid color. In the Zclass video the tool doesn’t change when ctrl is pressed, but for me it immediately changes to mask/pen and freehand. why?

on an newer imac w/10.6 magic mouse ZB4R2

my attached images are sequentially reversed for some reason, but you can see what I see when I press control. Thanks

Select the alpha and stroke whilst you have Ctrl held down.

Thank You Richard! The ctrl selection of the alpha threw me. It works for me now, Yea!
