Preserve Material ID

Hi everyone,

I would really appreciate your help with this.

I have a character model in 3ds Max with over 25 sub-object materials applied that I want to pose in ZBrush using Transpose.

I don’t need to do any additional sculpting or texturing to the model just a series of different poses.

The problem is when I export the model as an obj to work in ZBrush I loose all the material IDs. I then have to re-assign each element its original material id when I bring it back into Max for every new pose which is very time consuming.

Is there a way to preserve material id’s going between ZBrush and Max?

Mike

If I remember right, Steve Cox’s UVMapper had a feature to copy and paste material ID’s. That was meant for Poser, so I don’t know if the feature is also compatible with Max.

Thanks for your help Aurick!

I tried the free version of UVMapper but couldn’t find the copy and paste Mat ID feature.

Your suggestion put me on the right track though and I found a script called “copy_mat” by Budi Gunawan which does exactly what I need.

you can download it at the following url:

Very handy for Zbrush/Max workflow when you have lots of Mat IDs to deal with.

Thanks

Mike
