posting question

Hi everyone,

I have a question about posting in general here at zbrushcentral.com.

The questions and troubleshooting forum has been incredibly useful to me and I always seem to get just the right answer to my questions… I’m not sure I understand the main forum and culture here outside of this troublesooting forum. What’s a “buddy”, how does one get “stars”?

I have been recommending to post on the forums to others and have been doing so myself in hopes of interacting with the community and getting feedback I can use. The problem comes into play when the posts get no “stars” and fall off the forums instantly, not helping the poster at all. This opens me up to the obvious, “just post better work” critique, but I would like to know if there is something I do not understand about posting in general. I see quite a few great pieces with many comments and I also see very similar work getting no replies and falling off quickly.

Thanks for any feedback you can offer. I post quite a bit at other sites and get many constructive comments I can use in my work through there. I could use some tips and suggestions about the whole culture/stars/comments of this place if any of you have the time. This post is all in the spirit of me understanding more about this community and hopefully getting more out of it so thank you for any feedback or comments you can offer.

A “buddy” is probably some feature of the forum system that allows people to add other people to their friends lists, and track their online status. It is not a terribly important aspect of the forums, and I wouldn’t trouble yourself too much about it.

I also wouldn’t worry about “stars” very much. They are subject to totally random whims of people, and have no import whatsoever. Nobody takes them very seriously, they are just another inconsequential feature of the forum software. They have no impact on your post at all. Posts are only “bumped” by people making new comments in them, and you never know what is going to catch people’s eye enough to spur them to comment. Some people are just popular on the forums for one reason or another, and will always receive more attention.

As far as feedback, unfortunately ZBC is not a 100% douche-free environment, hence the “post better work” comment. If you are specifically seeking critique, it would be helpful to state that clearly, and ask for in depth feedback and hints. I personally rarely go out of my way to offer in depth critique unless it has been solicited.

Just keep your chin up, keep practicing, and posting your work. Make use of helpful critique when you can get it, but beyond that, don’t place too much import on any of the comments or “ratings” your work here gets. I don’t think I’ve ever given out a star rating to any thread here, even top row features. It’s just not important. If you keep improving, and posting a solid body of contributions, eventually people will start to know you, and you’ll attract more attention on a regular basis.
