Posing/Rigging Armor

Hi there, i´m new here, so first of all a big hello to all the great artists here (and also to all the not-so-great-but-soon-to-be-artists)!

I recently got into zbrush and i´m already knee deep in love…
It got me thinking, and instead of heading in a more 3D-Generalist direction (i´ve been learning 3ds Max on and off for almost a year now), i think character design now might be a new direction for me.

After some sketches i now started a female Character in an insectoid armor.
I modeled it an a T-Pose, but i´m considering some dramatic poses for my reel.
I don´t know if thats necessary, but i´d still like to do it.
But since some of the armor parts consist of many smaller plates, i´m not sure how to proceed.
My guts tell me, to simple merge the plates where its possible and retopology them into one big part, wich will be easier to rig/skin then a solution where i build a custom rig for all the tiny plates with tons of dummies and controllers.
Especially if i´m building a games oriented reel (i got some contacts in games companies, so i guess thats my best shot at an entry level job) and since i´m not that good at rigging (i´ve mostly used CAT-rigs so far).

Now for the question…can i trust my guts?
I attached some images for your consideration…(mind the armorparts for the torso and the arms)

Cheers,
i´m off to start some more threads…
