Posing mesh with Zsphere rig is slow/messy

I am trying to Zsphere rig what I thought was a simple mesh, but when I attempt to pose my character, it is very slow and very messy. What am I doing wrong?

Here was my process:

  1. Create a basic model using zspheres
  2. Adaptive skin >> Make adaptive skin
  3. Select adaptive skin
  4. Subdivide 4 or 5 times
  5. Sculpt it
  6. Save it as skin.ztl
  7. Create zsphere rig (or select the original from Step 1)
  8. Rigging >> Select Mesh >> select skin.ztl from Step 5
  9. Rigging >> Bind Mesh
  10. Pose

Now when use the zsphere rig to pose it, it is slow and messy. I am guessing it is because I subdivided too many times, but I’m confused because the seemingly complex default ztools like the Rhino and the Dog can be posed quickly and cleanly with a Zsphere rig.

How should I be doing this and is there any way for me to do this over the right way still using the Ztool I have already done?

You need to pose at a lower sub divide level. Trying to rig and pose at a high sub divide is pretty pointless.

How do I get a a lower subdivision level of the model I already sculpted?

If I have to pose with a lower subdivision level, how do I get the high-subdivision details back onto the posed rig? Presumably you don’t have to re-sculpt faces and cloths and fine details every time you change a character’s pose.

For getting low sub levels, click on geometry tab in tool panel and lower the levels assuming you didn’t delete them. If you did delete them try pressing the reconstruct sub levels button in the geometry tab.

As for projecting sculpted details back onto a model we will have to wait for someone elses explanation. I’ve never actually done so I’m just as clueless  .
