Posable Symmetry and Mannequins

So my understanding is that I should be able to pose a mannequin and create an adaptive skin and then sculpt on it using posable symmetry. But i can’t get this to work at all. Either it tells me there isn’t enough symettry or it does the posable symmetry but the one side of the symmetry is in mid air and doesn’t line up at all.

Should i give up and just sculpt first and pose later or is this actually possible?

Poseable symmetry relies on topology which is mirrored across an axis. Mannequins are made up of separate meshes joined by zspheres. When an adaptive skin is created, the inserted meshes tend to create overlapping geometry or, if the Dynamesh slider in the Adaptive Skin sub-palette is set to more than 0, the mesh is Dynameshed. Neither of these methods is likely to produce topology that will work well with poseable symmetry.
