Portrait of Scarlett Johansson

What?
The human brain is especially set up to recognise faces. This involves some extra synapse hardware to differentiate between thousands of individuals.
Therefore,if an artist can ‘fool’ this equipment, then it has passed the highest analytical systems we have.
ergo : this is a great test of skill.

imo this is the ultimate way to grow your skills.

Also, personally speaking,to grow creatively,it is better to exersize without the largely anal pressure of financial reward.More of a zen thing.

The ‘point’ in this sense is anti-creative.Play with purpose.

hey, whats with all the muslim comments in this thread? am i missing something? who says muslims always cheat?

Anyone who has ever tried to do a character that even looks slightly comfortable to look at, knows how unbelievable difficult it is. I agree, the likeness could be better, but nobody can say it’s not a decent attempt.

There is nothing wrong with doing this kind of work just for practice, if it hadn’t have been good enough for it to make top row, I think the crits would be much more constructive. The more you do this kind of work, the better you get.

I agree that it’s a good sculpt and likeness and a good image, but I’m also curious as to how much is ZBrush and how much is Photoshop.

shes a beautiful girl irl, but you really need to work on that nose.

beutiful women:+1:,lips very suggestive

I love the composition and the eyes, but the sculpt itself could use some work… Plus the displacement/bump/normal map is strechted on the forehead. Lips could also be improved. IMO the specular is tad too strong. The skin shader in some places looks more like concrete than skin. Probably because of the poor quality displacement. Cheers

Great image, man. Very, very effective use of your tools of choice. Good for you and congratulations on top row.

Excellent piece! So beautiful!

I think this is mostly just the mentality of production. For the marketing and the sales person. Trying to find some kind of function or monetary worth out of things.

It is not, however, the mentality of an artist though. Honing skills, improving the eye, pushing design, and mostly creating simply for the sake of creating. That is function enough for an artist.

Good portraits are beautiful. That is worth in itself.

I really like this piece so much. But , a crit if you do not mind because it might help you in the future.

The skin to me looks like Mud. The texture and feeling, if i imagine touching the skin of the model if feels as if my fingers will go threw the skin itself. Use practical knowledge from sciene to do with eyes, skin, info of IOR of the real world and apply it in your render engines. This looks like a picture made back in 2002.
Really think you should remake this again with a much better skin shader than this one, fix the eyes and add some feeling to it in erms of the black and white. In traditional photography.

Go go go!!! P.s human skin is kind of like spunge. It absorbes like, the particles of light do not bounce of it as it would other surfaces and it has such a variation of red, green, pink, purple e.t.c. In the skin. I attached a picture as example of the spunge quality.

I think it looks really good, and I actually like most of the detailing on the skin, even with(possibly even because of) that blown out specular.

However, that stretching on the forehead kills it for me. the rest of the sculpt looks tangible, like I could reach out and touch it, but then I hit her forehead (which seems to have a very sharp transition) and the pixolation just jumps right out and goes “Hai, I’m a digital image.”

Great Work ! I was gonna ask how did you render such beautiful hair, til I saw they aren’t rendered hair but PS edit. Kick ass signature by the way

Great resemblance! Well done!

I do agree that the shader is a bit bleached out (too white and shiny). I don’t like the way the outside edge of the iris is so sharply defined.

Off-Topic: Why does a persons creed have to come into this at all? Such a small-minded comment to make!

I know the hair was based on a photo, but you did a great photoshop paint-over of the hairs, and tweaks, etc

Great stuff man !!

I do not have a crit of your work as I feel it has achieved such a fine quality that picking on any small aspect is just idiotic.
Sure we can always get better but what the hell. If we never reach a satisfaction point then what is the point!

As regards some of the asinine comments in this thread — geeeeeezzzzzz people, get a grip.

If a student in my master degree courses in art at the art school I instruct at made some of these statements I would physically remove the SOB.

So, great work man and I bet it was fun to do too.

This is a superb likeness. I’d love to see another render with more flattering lighting.

Kudos on getting top row!

I dont care for this too much and it shouldnt be in top row. While some of it is really good I dont see the point in copying something note for note. To me that isnt creative. Also the mouth is off and has depressions where there shouldnt be. The pores are huge and the “artist” has used extensive photography and shown no wire frames or anything. I think its cool when Artists use the digital mediums to push their imagination and realize works that were never possible. This to me tho is not even as good as the street people I see selling custom portrait sketches down at Stanley Park. Im not trying to be rude Im just not feeling this at all.

I also think the Muslim comment was lame and not needed. Then again so is the person who wrote it so there ya go.

Hmmmmm. Some of you people here really are a bunch of wowsers. The work this guy did is excellent and yet you find time to make idiotic satements like jealous little primadonnas.
Get a grip people!

Great work man and I look forward to your next evolution.

wow as in i cant believe the ZBC community has turned to such crap. Here an honest individual posts up a piece of work to share with you all and he gets flamed for it why? So what if he used a photo for hair he said he did, he didn’t claim to have modeled or rendered it. behold.
“done it using zbrush for sculpt ,render and photoshop for hair and compose .”

Aside from that lets put yourself in his shoes for a moment, lets say you just finished your own sculpt of some celebrity; your focus was their facial features and you didnt want to get bogged down in sculpting hair. Not in the mood, not really a finished polished piece to add to your portfolio, whatever. Now as you can imagine looking at a bald celeb that isnt bald sort of erks you and pulls away from likeness (lets face it, hair is the frame of the face & an important feature on its own) so whats the harm in comping their hair in? This isn’t for a client, or original IP it seems (i could be wronge correct me) to be just something done out of passion and pleasure and to stress the point he didn’t take credit for the hair.

Juan to answer your question, the purpose of portraits aswell as why its not rigged, rdy for animation or a full body and what it was made for.

There are plenty of reasons, first and foremost lets just sit and assume that he wanted to sculpt scarlett johanson. He said she was cute, reason enough for most of us to try our hand at recreating her. Another reason could simply be practice; i imainge by your questions that you yourself arnt much of an artist (i could be horribly wronge but im going off the assumption that if you were you would’nt be asking these questions) Most people who draw, paint, sculpt the human form or what have you arnt initially able to create a believable face or figure from scratch and without having studied it extensively. What i mean by this is that in order to create something that looks correct one has to observe and understand the them.

ESPECIALLY the human face any minor mistake can be spotted from a mile away from anyone, artsy or not! So its imparitive to practice. Most artist have thousands of portraits under their belt and most of which other people dont see.

Bah i digress, i’ve made a lengthy post and answered questions that weren’t directed at me, slap me on the wrists i know =’( but seriously first time visit in a long time and the first post i see feels so negative for something thats just so pleasant

now then CONSTRUCTIVE CRITS!!! KEY WORD CONSTRUCTIVE!!!
