Portrait - Louis Froncois Bertin

Hi,

this is a model I’ve been working on for a while. It’s based on one of my favorite paintings by Jean Augustie Ingres… I really wanted to capture the expression in the face and the tension in the pose. Also I tried to imagine what he would look like from other angles…

I used xsi to model the basemsh and render… zbrush for the hires modeling and texturing

C&C welcome

Very nice work! Could use a bit more skin color variation, but very good!

WOw! Excelent! How’s the hair done, painted or XSI? I really love is face.
Could you post some progress-work?

very well…
masc

Very nice indeed! 5*

Kraken, Brett- thanks

Masc - the hair is xsi hair (shave and HairCut) rendered on a seperate layer with some post alterations… I’ll try to post some in progress images when I getr some time…

…to take a painting for can see behind in 3D! :sunglasses:
Very well done! :+1:

Really nice work, shraga…I like what you’ve done on the suit material
(care to share the render tree or is it post? ).

Some areas that could use a wee bit more love are the hands (fingertips
seem a little too pointy/sharp) and the pocketwatch detail and material. I don’t
know the painting well, but perhaps some texture to the silk shirt also?

Again, nice work!

WailingMonkey

This is outstanding and proof of your good effort shraga. :+1: Keep’em coming.

Very inspiring!

Great!!

Alex Oliver

Frenchy, DLB - thanks

WailingMonkey - I agree with your crit about adding some texture to the shirt and watch… At this point I kinda feel I need to move on though. I might get back to these things and fix em later on… The shader for the velvet consists of the built in xsi velvet shader (u can find it under windows-shaders) mixed with a phong to add the color variation…

GiantSum- very much appreciated…

Alex - thanks man!.. I’m happy you like it

Here’s another angle of the model with hair - I built the hair to work mainly from the painting angle - I don’t think I’ll show it in a rotation… it’s a patch work of many “hairs from polygons” which I combed indiviualy to try and match the messy feel of the hair in the painting…

Awesome work. Keep it up! I’m watching your progress. I like this oil picture a lot and all Ingres’s works.

Wow it’s really awesome. The face and hair really look like a painting. The body does look more 3dish, but it still fits in nicely!

I read what you said here:

it’s a patch work of many “hairs from polygons” which I combed indiviualy to try and match the messy feel of the hair in the painting…
But I still don’t get it :stuck_out_tongue: How did you do the hair exactly?

Great! Great! 5 *****!

Great copy of a masterpiece Shraga. Better do one by Delacoix so they don’t start fighting again over who’s easier to copy. You realy nailed it though, and I think Ingres would be impressed, if he wasn’t so worried what remarks Delacroix might come up with. Great stuff !!

Andreja - Thanks - I’m a big Ingres fan as well

Roja - about the hair… the hair (or fur) in xsi is created by picking polys and generating hair from them - if you want to control the flow and the kink of the different patches of messy hair you need to create many individual hair patches from different polygons- It won’t work to create the hair from all the polygons on the head at once… I don’t know if this makes sense but it’s pretty straight forward when you start working with hair… I learned a lot about CG hair on this project… mainly that it’s a huge pain in the a** to control

Sylvia - thanks!

Kahshe - Who fought about who it would be more difficult to copy Delacoix or Ingres? I guess I missed the debate… The “Ingres would be impressed” part of your comment is the biggest compliment I got yet - Even though I think his response would be more in the lines of “you copied it using what !!!”

I quickly through a phong on all the elements in the scene including the hair just to show how it’s combed…

shraga; I do think Ingres would be impressed, he’d want to get his hands on ZBrush. Ingres and Delacroix fought all the time at the Acadamy, once Ingres called Delacroix a bohemian and implied he couldn’t paint. Delacroix responded by saying about Inges that his was the fully realized work of an incomplete personality. This forum is one of the most advanced Acadamies I’ve seen lately. You are one to prove that.

Simply superb! Great painty look! :+1: :+1:

Fantastic! :+1: :+1: :+1:
