Polypainting

Are there certain materials that are just not suitable to polypaint on?

Example: I sculpted my model using matcap gray to help me visualize all the fine details for displacement and normal maps.

I then wanted to polypaint on that material, but the colors come out VERY dark.

When I switch my material to skinshade 4, the colors look accurate.

Is this normal to have to switch materials to polypaint?

Yes, you really need to use a material that is white and without too much shine. Otherwise, as you have found, you can’t get a good idea of what the colour is really like.

Thanks for the reply.

So… In a sense if I was working on a head, it may be smart to sculpt it with the matcap gray material.

When im ready to polypaint I would duplicate the head subtool and change materials (like skin shade 4)?

Does that make sense?

No reason to duplicate the subtool, just swap the material while you paint.

I usually polypaint with “SkinShade4” and occasionally switching to “Flat Color” to better see my painting.
