Polypainting with Layer Brush

Hi everyone,

I’ve searched the forums for any post related to the following problem and can’t find anything, so hopefully I’m just doing something wrong…

I’m trying to cleanly create polygroups from polypaint. I’m not sure if I ever tried using the Layer Brush before to paint with before, but in some older tutorials they recommend using the Layer Brush vs. the Standard Brush to keep the edges between colors sharp.

One example is the old Concept Car tutorial…

I’ve made sure only RGB is on. M, Zadd, Zsub are off. Focal Shift is 0 and RGB Intensity is 100. If my stroke is set to Dots or Freehand, the paint is barely applied and is very spotty wherever I drag my cursor, except for the the very last spot where my cursor is before I lift my pen (or release my mouse button). If my stroke is set to DragRect, it applies evenly, but dragging out predefined alphas isn’t very efficient.

I have Zbrush 4R5 installed (full install) on both my desktop and laptop and both exhibit the same behavior.

Any help/suggestions would be greatly appreciated, and I’d be happy to follow a different method if this method is this no longer the ideal way to define areas to be grouped.

THANKS!

Have you removed any Alpha that the brush may have, set rgb intensity to full and focal shift to -100

Thanks for the quick reply Richard. I did try removing the alpha and tried the focal shift at -100, 0, and 100 while the rgb intensity was always 100 (sorry I wrote “z intensity” in my original post).

I recall when changing the focal shift to -100 that it created a fine point, but when I increased overall brush size to something large enough to work with, I got the same unwanted results, but I’ll give it another go with your suggestion as soon as I’m in front of the app again.

Have you tried the ‘Pen A’ brush in the brush palette?

I haven’t tried that yet, but I will. Thanks for the suggestion.

Actually, Richard, I must not have tried the focal shift at -100 while also having the alpha removed. Making sure to do both as you suggested worked this time. Thanks again!
