Am I missing something or can you not paint the color white when polypainting?
You are missing something.
You can paint in any color you select… how the color appears in your view depends on the material you select to view your model with.
If its MATCAP or material with some shading etc…
Put on the SkinShade04 and from material menu set higher values on Ambient and diffuse… you may lower the specular…
Ok, then the problem is I guess is that I’m using the basic material?
for polipaint first fill object base color and then you can paint without problem, be sure rgb is on.
Ok I am definitely doing something wrong. I have tried numerous materials and “white” does not show up. If I paint any other color, then try to paint white over said color it simply acts as an eraser to the previous color?
MatCap materials have color, shading and lighting information baked into them.
Standard Materials do not have lighting information baked in, but do have color and shading information.
Flat Color material doesn’t have any information baked into it at all. i.e. If you select the Flat Color material, turn on Rgb and fill your object with red, then you can paint with white, or, if you fill your object with white then paint on a red color, you can then paint white on top of the red. For pure polypainting, you should use the Flat Color material.

It only appears that way. If you switch to the Flat Color material, you will see that you were actually painting it white.
Sorry it took so long to reply:( Thank you for the help. Anytime I assign the flat color material to an object, that object loses its definition?

The Flat Color Material is a special material that has no lighting information, that’s why your object displays without definition (so that it appears ‘flat’).
The Flat Color material shows only the polypaint color of your model, so you can see exactly what you’ve got.
When polypainting remember that the material you use will affect the colors. If you fill your model with pure white then that will show the material’s effect. For example, the Red Wax material will always look like red wax so painting ‘white’ will appear to erase other colors, it won’t show as white on top of the red wax.
If you are polypainting prior to converting the polypaint to a texture, select a material that gives a good white base and doesn’t affect the colors, such as SkinShade4.
If you want to paint white so it shows on top of a material like Red Wax then you will need to paint with Color and Material:
- Select the base material and color you want to work with.
- Make sure MRGB is on, then press Color>Fill Object.
- Select a different material and/or color.
- Paint on the model.
Note that materials only work within ZBrush and are not transferred to texture maps!
