Polypainting question

Hello,

I was wanting to know if its possible to do hard surface weathered texturing, like chipped paint, dirt layers, etc… with polypaint or other tools in Zbrush. We want to be able to do this directly on the model, and purchasing Mari or Bodypaint, really isn’t an option at this time.

Thanks for any help.

Yes, it is possible.

See info here. Lots of possibilities. http://www.pixologic.com/docs/index.php/Layers

As long as you have the resolution for the poky paint, of course you can.

Thanks guys

From what I tried in Mary or Bodipaint they don’t have such tools. I mean painting tools that would be aware of a surface imperfections. Only Zbrush and Mudbox do have them. So I think Zbrush is better than Mari for such things.

Look at trim brushes. They are best for texture painting. Only problem in Zbrush that you can’t use layers for texturing ( or at least it’s very troublesome) since necessary brush option doesn’t work on layers ( Alt is reserved for erasing there)

It would be so nice if you could use Spotlight to paint directly to the texture map. As of now, you have to use Projection Master to achieve this. It would be alright if Spotlight worked in Projection Master, but, sadly, it doesn’t. Hopefully, it will be possible in a future update.

So far, from what I have tried, Zapplink is the way to go. I can create layers of dirt and chipped paint, the only draw back is going back and forth from Zbrush to PS, but that is minor.

@kirkl: ARe you sure about that. Ive used Bodypaint before at a place I use to work and for the most part it works just like PS, You can paint directly onto your model and have it layers like PS.

Thanks for all the help guys.

I meant that in Zbrush brushes can be aware of a surface imperfections i.e. bumps or dents so you can painting only inside chips of old paint for example or otherwise on the flat part of the surface only while in photoshop/mari/bodypaint you need to create and manage a lot of masks for that and those masks not even 16 or 32 bit per pixel so you can’t use the same single displacement image for that .

Beside Zbrush I personally prefer Blender for painting because it allow at least to use 32bit displacement map as a mask and together with its interactive node based adjustment you can make necessary selection on the fly which can be baked after.

ps. I would not use Zaplink actually. It blurs the textures when they return back to Zbrush

Ah ok i see what you mean. I didn’t even know you could paint in Blender, I am deff. going to check that out.

Thanks so much for taking the time Kirkl

Great info. Thanks! I guess you’re real answer is to keep searching and figure it out yourself?
