polypainting different materials

hi all, still very new to all this but managed to get to the painting stage of my model (yay) but im stuck. Im following a video tutorial and ive got the skin done and now painting the eyes, which not not a subtool they are part of the same mesh, anyway on the tutorial the guy paints on the eye a material to make it glossy by clicking the M button, but when i do it my whole mesh gets the material. I was wondering if there was anything i was missing or how to solve the problem?

You can fill object in palette color (while M is active) with selected material or paint specified areas with brush, but when in subtools palette turn off preview polypaint, object will display with current selected material, not with this which you previous asigned.
