polypaint subdivsion artefacts

Hello,

I have this problem with polypainting: When I switch to a lower subdivision level (for example to get a stronger smooth effect), I get weird artefacts when going back to full resolution:

This was by going back to level 2, smoothing the left half of a black line, and then going back up. It happens with all kinds of edits at lower resolutions.
Is there a way around this, so I get a smoother interpolation for edits at a lower level?

Cheers,
sw

Nope. That is the effect you’ll always get.

You can simply smooth over that area again on the higher subD level to blur it.

not working for me… too high polycount for being able to smooth it out at the highest level, and if I smooth @ lower I get the same effect again when going back to higher… plus other kinds of artefacts if I would repeat this more than once.

I hope they’ll implement the smoothing they do for masking at some point. For that it works, grey only of course but it could be used seperately per channel.

Hi,

I also get this problem. It seems that when you go down a subd and smooth, go up again, and the artifacts are there. I might be wrong, but seems like that to me. Its really annoying. .I cant find any info on this, anyone?

That’s pretty much all the info there is.

It most likely has to do with the fact that each time you step down a subdivision level, you’re essentially removing 75% of the vertices. You might smooth the colors between nine verts on subdiv1, but when you step back to subdiv3 you’ll suddenly have 72 additional vertices that went untouched and still remember their stored color values. The result is a grid like appearance that perfectly follows the subdivision topology.
