Polygon count

While I have had zbrush a while, my working on it has been sporadic. I am now trying to work on it more regularly as another tool in my work as a sculptor.

I am getting on okay with actually applying my sculpting skills via a wacom pen rather than with clay but tend to come unstuck with polygon counts. I go through the process of staying on low divisions for as long as possible but ultimately want add more detail. I see lots of detailed models on this website so I know it is possible, but I just want to know how I move toward that stage properly.

My problem might be me or or the limitations of my Macbook pro, (2.66GHZz Intel Core Duo, 8 GB 1067 MHz DDR3) but I did a tutorial creating a female figure from zpheres and the poly count has reached 1658458. I am now getting colour wheels alot and yet I still would prefer to divide a number of time more. Is this poly count very high? Is my computer not up to the task? Is there a way of sculpting very fine detail without going so high on the polygon divisions?

I know I am probably being very naive, but I guess asking is the way to find out.

That’s not a lot of polys. You can use HD geometry.
