PM3D_Cube3D Dynamesh problems

I have what is probably a very odd question, so first I’ll try to explain what I’m doing.

I have been needing to make low relief sculptures milled into 4x8 sheet of MDF. So, I have been taking a texture image, make it an alpha, then stretching that alpha onto a rectangle that translates to 4x8’. Everything is working fine, and it looks great, but the issue I am having is trying to get a decent mesh on a 4 foot by 8 foot rectangle that is 1 inch thick at most.

The process is: I start with appending a PM3D_Cube3D as a new subtool, size it to 4x8, then I try to make it a much higher res mesh so the image can translate properly. The problem is that any method of retopologizing that I can think of doesn’t really work.
-Dynamesh creates a jumbled mess of unusable polygons, and adjusting the resolution slider doesn’t change anything. No matter where the slider is I wind up with the same point count, around 6 million. It works better if I dynamesh while it’s still a cube and alter it into a 4x8 sheet after, but I’m still unable to change the point count via the slider. No matter where the slider is I get a 6 million point mesh, so that’s what I am forced to work with.
-ZRemesher rounds off the corners and edges
-Divide also rounds off the corners and edges
-The Remesh and Project process sort of works, but I’ll wind up with some weird flaws and distortions

For some reason this doesn’t happen when I start from the Cube.zpr project in the lightbox, so is this just an issue with the PM3D_Cube3D? It does contain triangles, so that may be the issue, but I don’t know.
