Have you looked at ZSpheres in Zbrush? You can pull out zspheres into the shape you want. A quick google found this crab, which is essentially quite similar to the way you would make your model.

I would recommend doing a few introductory tutorials to the program because it isn’t one of those software packages that you can just pick up and use and it can be really frustrating otherwise.
