I’m trying to use an alpha to mask parts of a tool for extraction, and sometimes it works, but most of time it just masks the whole tool. I’m holding down ctrl and think I’m doing things right. Please let me know what I should do.
Try being in the standard brush, alpha on (the butterfly you have there), and make sure the stroke is “DragRect” and hold down the control key while masking and it should work.

Have just discovered the inflate brush combined with alpha makes much sharper results (reliefs), but there seems to be no way to increase the inflate brush power past 100. I know I can mask and inflate - and then double up the inflation in the deformation menu, but I haven’t found a way to increase inflation from the inflate brush past 100. If you can help, please let me know.
One thing you might try is the ReplayLast button in the Stroke palette. This will redo the last stroke of the brush, effectively doubling it. Note though that you must press the button immediately and not move the model at all. Moving the model also counts as a ‘stroke’ so that is what will be replayed.
The hotkey 1 is for Stroke>ReplayLast.
