Planet Of The Apes; ZBrush Style! **UPDATE**

In case you’ve been wondering why my image posts have died down recently; it’s because I’m actually working on somthing worth while. A few days back I wastch “Planet Of The Apes” The newish movie. Great movie; fantastic makeup effects.

I’ve decided I want to create “Thade” One of the lead apes. I think the exercise will strech my modelling skills as well as texturing, and push me to use the fibre brush (which I’m a tad reluctant to at present) I’ve been working on it for several days now and I’m at the point where I need to add fur.

My question lies here. Does anyone have any tips they can give me to use for the fibre brush. I’ve played around but I just can’t get that soft ape like fur look that so many of you seem to get with ease. Whats some settings I could try. Are there any pointers anyone could give me to get me headed in the right direction

It’s pretty difficult as there doesn’t appear to be an abundant supply of “Thade” pictures on the net. I visited www.planetoftheapes.com The best image I could find was this one

Any help in any area would be greatly apprecited. Thanks guys.

here some tips.
try
intensity very low.
RGB Low.
Zadd on or zadd off.
there setting under tools (modifyers) for the fiber brush.
you may want to BAKE it.
you have 2 set of color in the color palette for the top color of the fiber brush and Bottom you may want to adjust it.
when finished you may want to use the SMUDGE Brush in TOOLS and use the right ALPHA when smudinging and adjust your intensity.
old image the one on the left is kind of what your looking for.

Fantastic! Thankyou very much for the tips. This is actually starting to look somewhat like how I wanted  Thankyou!

I dont know if u’d tried this already bud,
ere’s a great tut by Pixolator ! :+1: http://www.pixolator.com/zbc-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=1&t=000078

Beyond baking the layer and using the Flat Color material for your fibers, the second secret to soft fur-like fibers is to use the smudge and blur brushes on the fibers.

A word to the wise, though: make the fur the last thing that you do, even after lighting and creating the final render settings for your scene. Once you’ve baked the layer, its entire contents will be the Flat Color material, which means that it won’t accept shadows anymore.

Thanks for all your help guys. I’m not exactly ready to do the fur yet; but I like to plan ahead and it was playing on my mind how the heck I was going to do it; now that I’ve done a few trials with the infomation you guys provided, I’m pretty confident it will turn out great. I’ll upload a pic of it soon still in early stages

If you’re looking for hair like on my Demon head picture. http://www.pixolator.com/zbc-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=1&t=005323

I explained it in a reply there how I made the hair.

heres an extremely early sample of my current WIP.

Pay no attention to the wierd skin texture, that is just guidlines that iv’e drawn on so I know where to add hair later on down the road. I’ve left lines etc on the face so I know where hair starts and begins. I’m not totally happy with it as of yet. A lot more tweaks still to come. As always comments are more than welcome

Hey Cal, that is !!! super !!! modelling…
Looking forward to see it properly textured.

Heres another update. I don’t have the helmet on him at this stage. I was just doing some hair trials. He also has no eyes yet. Just trialing some looks. As always comments are more than welcome.

:grimacing: looks to good :+1:
 is that posable ?

wohooo cal! really great work! model things from pictures is a really hard work you know the final model but you need to be really good using modeling tools. You got it! congrats man!

Heres another one I did. This one is a little simpler. More of a caracture feel to it. I was getting a little bored with the subject (half way through a kickass idea for my next peice hit me)

So this will probably be the last update. It’s nothing too special; but it’s good enough for now

Wow Caliban thats fantastic, keep up the good work!. Eagerly anticipating your next piece =). :+1: :+1: :+1: :+1:

Excellent work Cal! Love the skin textures.

That is some of the best realistic modeling I’ve seen-- I hope you return to this!

Awesome work, Cal :grimacing: :+1: :grimacing: :+1:

Nice, Caliban! I, too, would love to see you return to this at some time in the future. But what you have here is a very nice combination of modeling and texturing. Good work!
