Pixologic User's Group Meeting - September 2006

Ah ok. I thought I read in the flash intro on the main website that they were going to talk about the latest version of Zbrush. I guess 2 is the latest though for now. Wishfull thinking on my part.

Still wish I was there.

Cheers

Except for the last trivia question which was “what is the most asked question at ZBC?”

Duh…lol.

Here’s some photo’s of the event.

BIG thanks to the cute fire throwing pirate girls!

as usual zbrush delivers on another great usergroup meeting! wish I woulda checked here first, a few of us rolled up from diego, we were more than happy to carpool =) mayb next time.

i for one was very upset with the meeting. yes the models from pirates of the carribean were fantastic. i loved looking at them and those guys deserve major props for there skills. however i didnt learn a single thing. nor did i see anything new. i was truly hoping to see something from 2.5 instead we got nothing. major dissapointment, i doubt i will be going to another user group again. it was out of the way, hard to find and took hours to get there from orange county. what a let down.

however i didnt learn a single thing
-Although these meetings are more of a “wow” factor than a step by step schooling, it’s always a great verification to see & hear how these guys went about using ZBrush themselves, sometimes just being a regular guy on a regular computer I’m usually wondering “Do the pro’s do this differently?” It is what it is, great inspiration. Plus, I think most of us were taking hard mental notes when they talked of the various single meshes being seperated out to get past the poly count limit, and any seams between meshes would be null since the maps would be laid atop said seams…

What I would truly suggest is when Gnomon holds another “Workshop Weekend”, go to that! If you want live tutorials, this is the event to get to!!

i was truly hoping to see something from 2.5 instead we got nothing
-If they were going to announce anything, they would have probably said so in advance…and there would have been an even bigger mob of people. Crowds would have shown up, rsvp or not, lol. Nah, just stay tuned to your ZBC for that info, imo. Tons of patience and keep learning yer 2.0 ;o)

took hours to get there from orange county
-Come on, like me I’m sure you know the socal freeways, gotta allow. But, I live just a couple miles from Gnomon and I go visit my neice in OC (Anaheim), 90 minute drive. But, yup…certain times are better than others to jump on the freeway.

Nah I would say all in all, what an experience. Imho, doesn’t get better than zbrush, gnomon and freaking ILM. (plus; cute flame-throwing pirate girls, a mtn. of pizza & drinks, Meats’ bandanna, and Gnomon DVD/action figure/ZBrush 2.0 give aways)

Did ya meat Meats? How about Rick (freaking) Baker?

Um, all for free. Lol…hey, truly no offense, just my 2 pennies. ;oD

I won pirate toys but (sadly) I did not get to meet Rick Baker… that would have been awesome… as awesome as me nearly being on the set of thriller.

A big thanks to everyone who put together the Users group meeting.
Getting a chance to see inside ILM’s work on Pirates2 was a big thrill.
Those guys did an amazing job.

Coming from clay ZBrush is coolest software ive worked with.
Just as Rick Baker inspired me to be a makeup artist is now leading the way into the virtual makeup world.

Although, i still couldnt help but notice during ILMs presentation as they where showing concepts of the Dutchman’s Crew to CG models was…
It could have been acheived with makeup FX.
Oh yes.

Watching the split screen with the Motion capture next to CG models was really impressive but did it look real?
When does it become just Shrek?
Will actors be “acting” or just running through the motions?

Zbrush is a fun and amazing tool and after seeing and hearing ILMs presentation sounds like its going to be around for awhile.
Must keep practicing.

I would have killed to have won one of those big 18" jack sparrow figures!

First off… Thank you to Gnomon, Pixologic and ILM.
The event was awesome!
As for learning, Wow!
If you guys didn’t learn anything you weren’t paying attention.
That was some awesome info that was delivered by the ILM guys.
The work flow info although similar was a great eye opener.
I mean come on… 46 partitions on the head, Amazing!
I only wish I lived in LA and was able to attend all of the user group meetings.
Thanks for the great time!
Cheers

I felt the meetup was great. It wasn’t as instruction oriented as some of the previous meetups, but it was still facinating to see how ZBrush fit into such a streamlined pipe. It was also good to hear that ILM is currently using 2.5. I think some folks might’ve misunderstood that point.

But really, for me, the ZBrush User’s Groups are less about the presentations than about talking to the people that are there. That’s the best way of learning stuff. I have yet to run into anyone who wasn’t friendly and perfectly willing to talk about stuff. If there’s something you want to know how to do, ask around and someone will know how. Really!

Plus, getting there is worse when driving from San Diego.
