••• Pixologic User Group meeting - January 10th, 2005 •••

I was sad that I had to leave before Taron & Zack Petroc gave their demonstrations  I know I missed out big time. Bay, Meats and Ken were all Brilliant  Even with the various technical dificulties, it was a VERY inspiring and eye opening demonstration of what ZBrush can do (And with such speed!) The free food was great, worth the wait in the rain.

I just had to write this quick blurb to share my appreciation with you folks at Pixologic for putting this together. It was a real treat for us all.

Even my WIFE enjoyed it tremendously. She was SO opposed to going to this meeting. She is a comic book illustrator and has run screaming from 3D apps like Maya and Softimage on numerous occasions. She only came because of how much I rave about Zbrush at work. She went from glaring at me while we stood in the rain, waiting to get in; To smiling mildly when we got to the free food; to completely crushed that we had to leave before seeing the the rest of the presentations.

:+1: GREAT SHOW! :+1:

I am so sad…I missed another one…

I know what you mean MTB! It’s maybe a little easier for me being in England, there was absolutely NO WAY that I’d be able to get there so it doesn’t hurt TOO much LOL! I am jealous though. Even if an English or European version was arrangedwe’d never get all these 3d giants talking at one meet!

Anyway, any new revelations/demonstrations about the new version of ZBrush?

Still no offical word about if it was recorded or going to be or not.
long heavy sigh

 <— notice the hapless, tear-filled blinking…

Still hoping that someone recorded it…and then added the voiceover to the scripts so that we can see exactly what happened.

I’m really sad I missed this meeting too

I even checked flight prices in case there was a special deal that I could have taken up just to be there - no such luck, unfortunately.

I’m really looking forward to feedback from those lucky enough to attend - I’m sure it’ll have been a great event!

Maybe next time…

Last nights user group meeting was amazing. It was well worth the wait in the rain. Along with being inspirational due to the amazing talent it was also very informative.
Ken Brilliant did a fantastic job showing us quick ways to create our own alpha brushes and conviced me to try to use Z-brush not just for displacement mapping but also for color and bump. He also showed us it was all about the Tilde ~ when creating tileable texures.
Taron’s animated displacement map movie was beautiful and he was a joy to listen to.
Everyone else (Bay, Zack and Meats) really inspired us to to go and sculpt. Seeing them work was really a treat as their models are so beautiful.
Zack really drove home the importance of good research and anatomy study. His models were so detailed and realistic as to be old world statues. His fine art training really shines in his models.
Thank to Pixologic for hosting on of the best user group meetings ever and for the wonderful food. :+1:

… Tilde ~ when creating tileable texures.

What does that mean?

Eric,

If you hold down the tilde (~) key when painting on a canvas, you can click and drag the canvas. This works like an interactive version of the offset filter in photoshop.

So, you can paint a texture, then shift the canvas and continue painting to hide the “seams”

Hope this helps…

last night was fantastic;the room was just overflowing with talent, and the demonstrations were genius.

thanks for the drink rubyscooby.

i’ll make a more detailed post of what went on when I get off work…why am I back at work already?

Thamx NLight!

The event was fantastic. We’d like to thank everyone for coming, and for the benefit of those of you who couldn’t make it we will be posting more information soon.

I was a bit grumpy about having to stand out in the rain before being let in, but the event itself was fanstastic, and inspiring. Being a fan of Raitt’s work, it was nice to see him load up some of his models and share his approach. I learned many new things about this great tool.

If you didn’t make it, guys, you seriously missed out. I’m putting together something for CGnetworks that will talk at length about it. It really was the best user group meeting I have ever been to and many other people said the same thing.

The most amazing aspect of it was the marriage between the artistic and the technical approaches to Zbrush.

Bay Raitt’s approach seemed very much to be infused with the focus on efficiency and speed that he mastered so well in poly modeling. Listening to him talk about his craft you can only sit and open your ears as wide as possible.

Meats’ just creates the coolest stuff on the web. Watching him work should be a paid-for event.

Ken really rolled it out with his demo and gave us a complete process for creating an awesome character.

On the way up to SF, I had the privilege of sharing the flight with Taron who has got to be one of the kindest souls in CG or many a place for that matter. With the heart of a Buddhist and the mind of an artist his 54 seconds of animation was absolutely awesome. Awesome! He really energized the crowd!

Zack went last and, man, there is not a better sculptor out there in film. He spoke of following the lines of the body through the model as though he was a 17th century master sculptor and shared some of the theoretical concern of his work. He was very thoughtful and insanely talented.

Thanks need to go out to Alex Alvarez who was absolutely essential for the evening. Without him and Rafael the show would not have been half as successful.

great userGroup overall, only complaint was about time allotted per presenter. considering the strong game and movie industries in the bay area it might have made since to shorten Meat’s presentation a bit while allowing more time for Bay to talk pipeline theory and Zack more time to talk technique. it was a shame so many people missed Zacks talk. hope there are more such userGroups in the future.

question: anyone remember the hotkey they mention for interactively moving the lights?

someone must have some video please …

OH MY GOD!

[color=Black]What a great show!

Alex

i enjoyed the last part immensely. i too agree that other presentations should have been cut shorter in favour of giving more time to others like zack. my goodness! listening to zack’s part of the presentation was worth waiting outside in the rain. he really shows the potential of zbrush in the hands of someone who is truly devoted to art and not fancy/flashy techniques. listening to him talk and watching him work really sold me into zbrush even more. it was a huge shame that many people i know did not stick
around until the very end, thus missing out on what really made the meeting
worth attending.

Thanks for that info Matt. Gives me hope.
