I like the Photoshop high-pass filter and blur idea but won’t you still end up with artifacts when imported into Zbrush?
Hey Shawn, I can’t remember the entire movie but I did this workflow again just two days ago and its featured by Paul Fedor in Ballistic’s Creative Essence book The Face.
The key to removing the jpeg artifacting is to use ZBrush’s canvas as a go between. Just set Alpha: Blur to 2 or something low like that. Then grab the canvas again by pressing Alpha: Grab Doc.
Note, this workflow was created several years ago. Cameras today, larger texture maps and the use of RAW can minimize the artifacting created. However, Polygon limits are still an issue until HD Geo can be exported to other 3D apps.
