Pinching round forms through Displacement

Hey guys,

I’ve ran into a bit of trouble, retrieving some of my forms through displacement. As an example of my problem, I’ve attached an image, to illustrate.

The tool I’ve been using in Zbrush for these blops is the magnify tool. And the result, when rendered in mental ray, is that all the round forms are beeing translated as going into straight points.

The map we’ve used is 8k, which obviously can’t be the problem. Also tested the map inside zbrush, resulting in the exact same problem. We are on a bit of a deadline, so I hope one of you guys here is familiar with the problem and hopefully able to help me out. Thanks a ton!

what settings are you using in the multi displacement exporter?

What is your settings in Maya for your approximation editor and your alpha offset and alpha gain?

are you using 16BIT or 32BIT?

I did just did some tests.

It looks like the render is only an issue with 32BIT for some reason. The 16BIT was rendering off fine.

Try 16BIT and let me know. Oh ya I also did the displacement as adaptive not DPSubPix

Hey man, I truly appreciate your time to look into this little problem I have. I’ve tried both the 32bit as the 16bit maps and tweaked about every possible setting both in Zbrush as in Maya and XSI, but no help so far. Even reprojecting the displacementmaps in Zbrush on a clean mesh results in the same problem.

A close friend of mine just informed me about Zbrush baking out linear maps instead of raytraced displacement maps. That is what is probably causing this problem of mine…If that’s indeed the case, that would be slightly disapointing. Any pixologic folks here to comment on this?

I have found that you must import the original. not even the morph target will work. Smooth UV and Adaptive have to be on in the tool bar the matter what you choose in the MultiDisplace3 Export… Good luck!

I would love to know more about the Displacement being liner. Would explain why people say to stay away from ‘Pinch’.

Turning adaptive on, did the trick! Thanks a ton Mike!
