Pinch/zoom? Your favorite Zoom and Pan tips when using Wacom Pen?

I have a Wacom Intous 3 tablet with the 2 button stylus.

Zooming is REALLY unnatural for me – cntl/hover/rtclick/drag. Panning is almost as bad. I waste a lot of time doing these maneuvers with my mouse. Maybe its just a poorly designed stylus.

Prior to upgrading to 4r8 I had a couple keyboard hot keys “[” and “]” to zoom in and out respectively, but that still felt awkward.

Any suggestions?

Like, any way to pinch to zoom with my MacBook pro trackpad :). That would be nice.

Thank you!

Since you asked, and only because you asked, yeah. Get used to it. Opinion follows, since opinion was
solicited.

  1. stop trying to use right click navigation…it’s only there as a capitulation to users of other popular interfaces, except in this case the familiarity works against it where it deviates from the norm. Muscle memory works against you more when something is similar but not quite the same as you’re used to. Better that it be wholly different.

  2. Instead, embrace the classic tablet oriented nav scheme. Drag to rotate. Alt drag to pan. Alt drag release to zoom. It’s unique and functional, and once you get used to it, you might find other lesser used programs uncomfortable to use with your tablet.

I offer no opinion on what might be a “superior” nav scheme. My opinion has only ever been the more time you spend fighting what Zbrush wants you to learn, the longer you spend not zbrushing like a champ, while the people around you do. Once you commit something to muscle memory, it’s an autonomic function like breathing and all other concerns become moot.

Thanks Spyndel,

I’ll do it.

But, So what do the pros do when they are zoomed in tight and have no open canvas space? (I think that the zoom procedure you describe requires dragging on the canvas, not the model).

I appreciate it.

Well, there’s always the border. The section of the canvas beyond the thin white line but before the canvas edge counts as “empty canvas” for the purposes of navigation, even if it’s filled by an object. In addition to that I always pan the canvas (not the model) off to the left a little so theres a broad stretch of empty space I can use for navigation, or drawing marquees, or what have you. I use a custom UI that minimizes UI elements on the left or right of the canvas so left/right space is plentiful, especially in the widescreen era.

It’s just the way I work. But now that Im used to it, I open up other programs and get frustrated when they don’t work the same as zbrush. It all comes down to muscle memory and what you’ve conditioned your hands to become used to.

Spyndel, excellent!
I did not know that about the canvas border.
Now I’m sure I can get used to it.
Thanks!!

Any ideas for non-destructively clicking on the model to set a new center for zoom and rotate?

If I’ve recently edited a spot on the model but want to zoom or rotate from a different location, I’ve been clicking on the new spot with a quick Shift-click. But I wonder if there is a better way to tap on the model to reset the center without risking unwanted changes.

Thanks!
