When I was 12, I spent the ENTIRE Summer, and every penny making what was to be ultimate WW2 diorama. Like I said, I was 12, but it was close to 4 feet across, and depicted countryside, as well as a war-torn European village. I made entire buildings out of wood and plaster. I made streams, telephone poles with wires hanging down, I made craters from artillery strikes. There were tanks and a crashed Stuka. My uncle made me nice routered trim for the border, which I stained and varnished. I went to a trophy-making shop and ordered a real brass plaque with the title and my name, and attatched, as a crowning touch, with tiny brass nails.
It was my Great White Whale.
As the first rustlings of New England Fall approached(now I’m getting literary…), I took the proper steps to enter my masterpiece into the North Haven Fair. This is your typical agricultural fair, where ribbons are awarded to the best tomato, pumpkin, rabbit, quilt, and kids’ crafts projects.
Well, the good news is I won second place, but the bad news is the kid who took home the Big Blue Ribbon did so by taking a shoebox lid, drawing lines on it with a Magic Marker, and gluing a bunch of HotWheels cars to it.(!?!?!?!)
Maybe this little tale helps with your disappointment. I love your lake-beast.
