is it possible to paint a poly group? I have tried to create a group from a mask, but it hasnt given me the line I want… ideally I would like to paint a polygroup… is that possible?

You can but it will depend on the density of the mesh how accurate it is. For accuracy it is best to create polygroups at the lowest subdivision level. Use the Lasso selection to hide everything but what you want in the group then press Tool>Polygroups>Group Visible.
