Painting onto an existing texture

Once I have a texture on a model how do I paint (make changes to the original texture) while its on the model?

Do I need to do anything special?

You’ve got basically two methods: Projection Master and Polypainting. You can find out more here:

For your situation I think that you will find it simplest to use Polypainting. The basic method would be:

  1. Subdivide your model so there is a high enough resolution to support the texture detail.
  2. Convert the existing texture to polypaint.
  3. Paint your model to modify the coloring.
  4. Convert the polypaint back to a texture which you can then export out of ZBrush.
