painting custom Alphas like surface Noise on Mesh (scales etc.)

Hi,

what i mean is the feature that Noise has: You can paint only single parts of the previewed Noise on the Mesh and the noise is always “around” the Mesh.

If you tried the Put “scales” on your Model you maybe know what i mean.
I did much research but the only thing i found are “dotbrushes” like the one that comes with Zbrush (snake scales, fish scales and so on)

They are great for 1 Line of scales but if you want to paint another one it is very difficult to paint the second seamless.

Also this is very sensitive to scaling or the draw size. If you change something, its hard the get the scales to the same size like before.

Is it possible or wouldnt it be nice if ZBrush can tile an Alpha around a Mesh and then you can paint it there where you need (like you can do with noise) without seams?

Little example: You have a Tube or Cylinder and want Scales or something on the Surface. Now you must Draw 3 or more single Lines of Scales along the Object and mostly dont get it without seam and also a Alpah is only projected directly to the View and dont follow the Curve of a Mesh.

a better Way would be that ZBrush Wrap the Alpha Around the Object with 2 or more Tiles and then you can paint it where you need. This way there is no seam and the Scales follow the Surface around. Also you can rotate and scale the Model but the Alpha has always the same size on the Model.

Its the same like Texturing, where you wrap a texture around something, is that in some way possible with alphas and modeling?

ps: sorry for my bad english

Create a uv layout in another 3d app, that suits the kind of scales you want. Create a texture of the scales, apply it to your model and mask by texture intensity.

I will give it a try, thanks.
