If I should choose a free program to use extensively I would take BLENDER (www.blender3d.org). It´s a extraordinary mighty modeling and animation program with bones, weightpainting, skinning and much more. You even can build GAMES with it! Fantastic!
And now my super tip: download “Poser 3” for free - and absolutely legal! It was meant for the Galileo contest (Pro 7 - a german broadcasting station) which ended april 2003. But still it´s downloadable - you get the serial number per email.
