If you guys haven’t checked out the 3D Coat 2.10 beta yet there’s a lot of cool new functionality in there like the new retopology tools, Direct X and Open GL versions, and coming soon a mac version and volumetric sculpting. Andrew also talked about adding fur and fibers to a future version. I haven’t even mentioned the (currently) free tree designer program that comes with it.
Beta v 2.0 is released
(only for owner of the V 1.0)
Some news : a “Gizmo” size/rotation/symmetry/copy
A snap “surface”
A snap “normal to surface”
A snap point only on the “front face”

Some details of the competition are out. Perfprmance looks pretty good
…and predator becomes prey.
when? for mac? and how much? and where do I sign?
how on earth could they have an entire 25 million polygon model on screen and not have the computer slow to -5 fps? It looks great though, exciting times for digital artists.
looks good not good enough for me to leave ZB but certainly a competent competitor lets hope it will help drive the advancements in cgi.
if you don’t have a great card forget the 25mill count… and why am I using HDR lighting while modeling?? ZBRUSH 4 EVA
Very cool to see them coming up with sweet features for Mudbox, but I love Z-Brush too much to change over.
Besides, Z-Brush developers always go above and beyond with the updates and the user community is the coolest.
Also, it’s not so much the tools you use as it is the vision and skills as an artist that make incredible works of art.
mudbox has a history of leaving the users without updates and feedback or even help support. Zbrush has been running ever since it hit the floor and i dont see it stoping. Constantly Updating the software to fit our needs as artists, it reminds me of an open source project that you dont have to code to get your ideas implimented the software team will do it for you.
Even at this years Autodesk GDC party they had mubox set up on a blackbird in the back and someone from autodesk was there to help people who had questions. Well that lasted for about 1 hr then the guy went MIA and there was a ton of people standing around the maching with all thumbs it seemed.
Victorys!
Zbrush: 3 Mudbox: 0
mmm…25million polycounts…
it’s only can run on highend computer
actually i perfer to sculpt in mudbox than zbrush…it just feels more natural…but i like the bursh can do in zbrush
in the end they are both great program for artist…so still wait and see
Isn’t this a weeeeeeeeeeeeee bit tacky? Advertising Mudbox on a competitors website, on a forum intended for posting work done in ZBrush. Just sayin
There is a dedicated thread for other software on the community forum.
sorry man. not a personal attack but you’re referring to the three years or so between zb 2 and 3. the support the mac guys are getting in that thread. or the absence of certain simple features folks have requested ( outside of the non_existent feature requests forum ) for the past 4 years ?
i see pixologic as no different from autodesk in so far as they’ll do as they please to satisfy their own ends. and those only. i really hope this next release of mudbox is so strong that it forces some serious competition that focuses on the needs and wants of the consumer
Tools are tools, it be could be Craftsman or Zbrush.
The narrow mind only uses what it is comfortable with.
New tools can only mean new inspiration.
I don’t really care what the brand of paintbrush is… only if it paints!
I surly will not be limiting my creativity by just using one tool, thats just plain silly.
I’d really like to see someting about new sculpting tools, posing, painting.
Huge polycount and speed increase are good news, HDR lighting is nice…
, but i don’t want to miss Clay brushes, transpose, topo selection from ZB.
Oops sorry wrong area for sure. Dont mean to offend anyone. I do own a zbrush licence and I dont own mudbox. Im sure the mods will move or delete the thread if it offends, but hey competition is a fact of life and it wont help to hide it under the carpet I guess. Hopefully competition makes zbrush stronger for all our benefit.
PS Im sure most zbrushers are interested in this news even if they dont want to jump ship
PPS See moved already, thanks
Could not be as powerful as MB and not on par with ZB yet, but for now i see more real innovation
into an app like 3D Coat especially compared to Mudbox and in the area of 3D painting.
as for Mudbox, wel’ll see that better at siggraph time.
in the mean time 3D coat 2.10 is in the works, with new retopo tools and 3.0 seems will have volumetric sculpting too. Plus, better painting onto low poly models.
Look at the retopology tool in the making for 2.10
there’s also alot of support from the programmer. he hears what users want and actually tries to make it.
there’s not only sculpting power to consider!
finally, i agree onto competition. the more competition there is, the more apps will get better.
so I watched the preview… I still don’t see it… they’re still playing catch-up as far as I’m concerned… even as a specialized sculpting package (a fraction of ZBrush’s total functionality)
the performance they’re boasting is a little better than what I currently get out of ZBrush… with an 8800 GT, Intel Q6600, and 4 GB of ram, which was a $1400 system 8 months ago… I get up to 16 or 17 million polys on a single subtool before performance gets annoying… and they make no mention of the kind of hardware you’ll need to achieve the numbers they’re boasting
and I’ve yet to work on a model where polygon limits became an issue anyway
the only reason I see for anybody to consider Mudbox over ZBrush is a deep rooted grounding in a traditional 3d package interface… or the unavailability of ZBrush on a mac, which is actually the only reason I find understandable
I saw some previews of Mudbox early in January and some stuff was impressive indeed [way more than is in the vid ;)]. Competition’s always a healthy thing IMO.
One thing that Zbrush has been able to deliver and where mudbox has failed so far is the ability to sculpt quite a lot of detail into a low subdivision level like 2 or 3… Looking at this preview this hasn’t changed… [anyway doesn’t seem to have]
Also I just hated the Mudbox 1 interface
Mudbox… pffff… I don’t need an app which requires a mainframe of a GPU to pull off what ZBrush can pull off with a VGA card for 20$. I’m still looking to get rid of the only two useless products I own… Mudbox and the Space Pilot from 3DConnection. Any reasonable offer accepted (as I did the past 8 month)!

Overall the preview was just that. A preview. Not much was really revealed in it other than the rendering and new polycount ability. And that’s the least they need to do to be able to compete these days. I didn’t see anything about color texturing, which is surprising since I figure that’s a pretty important feature which ZB has had for years now. That doesn’t mean that they aren’t working on it though.
What I would like to see for either of these (who knows, Mudbox might have already it. I never really used it) is the ability to render in a true 3D environment. I don’t mean with a full fledged new material editor with nodes or anything. Just something which allows for accurate hard shadows. That’s really the only problem I have with ZB and that’s due to it’s using a pixel depth rendering solution (which still looks incredible for soft shadow GI renderings).
