opening the mouth

Hi i am sculpting a normal sphere with dynamesh and the character is modelled with a closed mouth. I am wondering if what is the method or brushes that is able to seperate the lower jaw from the head to make his mouth opened.

Don’t know what other apps you have but most app’s use morphs for character facail exspreations.
DAS Studio Pro 4 is free for a limmited time you can see what I am talking about with DAZ.

Charaters like HULK ,LOTR Smegail where modeled in app’s like AutoDesk MAX then textured with zBrush.
Smegail was made with Maya.

Even thou zBrush is the koolest CGI App ever made I don’t think it has morphs yet.
zBrush is used a lot as a plug for app’s likw Max.
but you could hollow the mouth out and move the moth with transpose in zBrush.
Some one more exspearenced with zBrush probaly would have a better way.

For got to say you can get the genernal idea of charater topolagy from the daz charaters also.

You can look at the charaters topolagy at turbo and ya can see the good ones all pretty much follow the same topolagy.

Good Charaters are not the easyest meshes to make and it takes efort to learn it all but it’s well worth learning.

My bad zBrush does have Morph Target .
I’ve never used zBrush for Morphs Target .

Would be a good start

It’s easier to make an open mouth and close it than vise-versa, but both are relatively quick operations. Typically you sculpt in a ‘mouth cave’ and work your way out from there. I like to use the ClayBuildup brush for a lot of this work (of course I use the claybuildup brush more than the standard brush, haha.)

As for ‘morphs’ the StoreMT button stores a single deformation that you can easily switch back and forth from. If I were you I would start using ‘layers’ as they work similarly to blend shapes in other 3D apps. Just be aware that once you re-dynamesh or change the topology the layers will be baked into the mesh.

Hope this helps!

The ways I know of are isolating the area with a mask, for example the lower lip and jaw of you character, and move/rotate transpose it until you get the mouth open. This may take some time but it’s possible. You would most likely also have to re-sculpt a bit to get the right look using this method.

The other way that comes to mind right now is the “Move Topological” (I think that’s what it’s called) brush. Look it up to find out exactly how it works but basically this brush allows you to move geometry based on it’s topology, making it easier to manipulate areas that would otherwise be difficult to isolate (eg: the lower lip from the upper).

Having said that, it may be better to just start again with the knowledge that you need the mouth to be open and sculpt accordingly.
