opening old ztl's in 3.12 - OSX

Maybe I’ve missed a fix for this in the forums, but I can’t get previous ztl’s from 2.5 to open correctly in 3.12. Here is a sample of what I’m getting (plus plenty of spinning beachballs). This tool has just over 774k polys at it’s highest res. I started from very low poly cage exported from Lightwave.

i’m on a pc.
but two options you could try that may or may not help is to save at your hightest subd in 2.5 and try to open that in 3.12.
if that doesnt work, you can always with your highest level make an obj. and import that into 3.12 then do a reconstruct subdivisions. there is also the possiblity its a scale issue but i’m not sure. does the explosion happen immeditely ?

Thanks for the response, spaceboy412. I just started with zbrush3, so I haven’t gotten to mesh reconstruction yet. I was kinda hoping that the switch to zb3 would be seamless, as far as my previous models were concerned. I guess I need to watch some tutorial vids instead of diving right in. No fun.
:frowning:

…and yes the explosion is immediate.

There is another problem as 2.5 does not work on an Intel Mac and 3.12 only works on an Intel Mac so it is not an option for a lot of people.
It is just good to see that it is not just me.

3.12 should read all files saved by earlier ZBrush versions. If you encounter any difficulties with your version, please file a report (see http://www.zbrushcentral.com/zbc/announcement.php?f=8 ) and include a sample mesh. If we identify the problem, we will have it fixed:)

Just sent the email, support. Zipped the ztl down to 6.3mb. Looking forward to what you find out.

Can I get an update on this issue?

Please, any kind of response will do.
The silence reminds me too much of a recent 18 month experience that I’m sure we’re both trying to forget.

I would make sure there are no alpha’s or textures saved with the older ztl… thats all i can suggest.

I had the exact same issue. But I also had the Windows version of ZBrush 3.1. My solution was to open the ZTLs up in ZB3.1 then resave them. When I opened the new ZTLs in 3.12, they worked.

But if you don’t have the Windows version of ZB3.1, I’m not sure how to get them to work other than to possibly go back into ZB2 and export the hi res mesh as OBJ files. You should be able to reconstruct the subdivision levels when the OBJ is imported into ZB3.12.

but I was really trying to get a response from SUPPORT. You know the people that asked me to send them an email and a sample model over a week ago. I would just like to know that they got the email and are planning on someday looking into my issue. That’s it, just a simple response. I’m tired of waiting 18 months for acknowledgment from these people.

a little help?

I think you misunderstood spaceboy412's post.

From your reply I assume you confuse reconstruction with Retopology.
In the Geometry Palette and after importing your higher subdiv level as an obj choose the Reconstruct subdiv until you reach your lower sudiv.

I don’t think you need a tutorial for that

If you have a problem and you can’t reconstruct go to the Tool:Texture subpalette and Enable Uv

Cheers

That’s a good work around. You’re right, I did misunderstand spaceboy412.

That still dosen’t explain being ignored by support, but I guess I’m fine until the next time I have an issue and they ignore me.

Glad that helped,

Anyway I still didn't switch to 3.12, still on 3.1 on Bootcamp. I'm going to switch after my current projects because of possible incompatibilities and bugs, like your case for example. There are enough anyway in a Character modeling, texturing, rigging, animating, rendering workflow with all these Apps! Without insulting Aurick or anyone else, the best Support is always the user base(all these possible combination of Apps, projects and experiments) Cheers
