Opening a saved document in ZB4

This may be a stupid question, but How come I can’t do anything with my (ZB4) sculpt in a saved document? I can see it, but I can’t use Edit and continue sculpting. So what do I have to do to continue with it and what good is saving a document vs. saved tool?

Okay, that was like 3 questions. Sorry.

Any help is appreciated.

update: ok never mind, i think i got it now, duh.

Hey, I have the same problem, You say you got it now …
can you tell me how did you do, Please

Well Teva, it goes something like this…

If you want to save/open your 3d model, it’s saved as a “tool” (.ZTL); then you can load the tool later and continue to “edit” or sculpt it.

Now when you save it as a “document”, you are dropping your work onto the canvas, just as you would for your 2.5 painting or illustration. If you save your 3d model as a document (.ZBR), it would no longer be a 3d object. All of the tools/sub tools will no longer be separate objects…they will become a part of the canvas.

So save or open your new 2.5D paintings & illustrations as Documents, and save or load your 3D models as Tools.

I sorta paraphrased from an older lynda. com tutorial vid. I hope this helps.

Better still is to save out parts, your .ztl and or obj, screen grabs, test renders and the big one, the .zpr; project file which saves all tools and such so you can pick up where you left off. It’s a really good idea to save every little while under a new name and keep on working, just in case ‘something goes wrong’. Undo history can be saved with the project for tools but you have to make sure it’s enabled in preferences and the file save dialog.

Yes, I overlooked the Project file. Thanx for that Doug. I was gonna come back and mention you can also save as project file (.zpr); you beat me to it.

And saving your work often, with progressive numbers (_01, 02, etc) as you advance your model is always the way to go, it should go without saying. It’s better to lose maybe an hour of work instead of days or weeks. If you change your mind and want to make a drastic change, or the program crashes, you can always go back to a previous # file, or the last saved version and go from there.

I do save parts (sub tools) separately too, and sometimes .obj files, good catch Doug Jones!

THanks guys
