On entering Tool Edit mode, the Z position of the mesh gets reset

Dear Support,

On entering Tool Edit mode, the Z position of the mesh gets reset every time to the very back of the canvas, which makes it incredibly hard to place objects on the canvas. All other Transormations applied seem to be retained when re entering edit mode, it just seems to be the Z position on the canvas is reset. Is there a way to either turn this behaviour off or to work around ? Latter could be something like a Z-offset Slider one could use similar to the right click navigation directly in edit mode? Is there something like that or else anyone with an idea ?

thanks in advance

I’m a little unclear as to what effect you are seeing. For example, the Picker palette Z slider controls the Z depth at which meshes are first drawn on the canvas. The default setting for this is 0.

I tried this:

  1. With Picker>Z at 0, I drew the Polymesh3D star on the canvas.
  2. I drew a second instance of the Polymesh3D star on top of the first, so that I can easily see if there is any change in Z depth.
  3. I turned on Edit. The second instance did not move.

Do you get this?

Hey Marcus, many thanks for the reply, try this:

perspective on, draw star on canvas and enter edit mode. Snapshot the star for a duplicate and now leave edit mode and enter Move mode, grab the gizmo and move the star in front of the first one. Now on re-entering Edit mode, the Z is reset. So the only way i know up to now to move something on the Z axis on the canvas, is to use transforms but never enter edit mode again. I must be missing something

thank you very much for your patient help

OK Erklaerbar, now I have got it, thanks. I will let the development team know.

thanks a lot Marcus!

still the same with 4.2b  also moving in perspective farther away is making your object bigger instead of smaller. screwed up, canvas adieu.

I believe there are technical reasons to do with changes with perspective mode that mean this issue is difficult to resolve. I can offer you two solutions:

  1. If you need to work with a model in Edit mode and a background reference image then use the Image Plane plugin. This will place the image far enough behind the model so that the model is not clipped.

  2. If you wish to work with the canvas and preserve the size and position of a model that you set with the Gyro (when Edit mode is off) then try the attached plugin. Simply unzip and place the ZSC file in your ZStartup/ZPlugs folder. On restarting ZBrush you will have a new menu called ‘Store ZDepth’ in the Transform palette with two buttons; Edit On and Edit OFF

Set up your model how you want using the Gyro. If you want to enter Edit mode then press the Edit ON button. You can then sculpt your model (but note that the position in Edit mode will not be the same as you set with the Gyro).

Press the Edit OFF but to turn off Edit mode and return your model to the stored position.

Let me know if this is any help.

If I understood you correctly - it means that in ZBrush 4R3 is not possible to edit Tool which was arranged with Gyro as it was in ZBrush 4.0? (Macros is attached which shows the possibility of ZBrush 4.0)
